Heart Rate

Hi. This might be a stupid question but I hear people talking about heart rate on here.

I don’t know what mine is when running but I used a treadmill on Thurs and my heart rate was 175/6. I did find it much harder on the machine and I was SO hot in the gym but worry that this sounds high?

I’m very nearly 53 if that helps.

Thanks

Hi I've worried long and hard about my HR I'm 57. Today's 30min average HR was 158 which for me is average, since getting a garmin I see my HR fluctuates wildly but more importantly my recovery rate is quick and resting HR mid 60's went to see GP who listened to my story and heart, she is a runner and told me to keep running. I did my 1st 10k run on Wednesday recovering from chest infection 1 ½ running with average 180. Could still greet passersby and order pot of tea at end of run and HR back to normal quickly. I hope this long dialogue helps. I still worry about HR, may go for further investigation, but think for me this is my normal.

Thanks Grannytobe. I don’t have a heart rate monitor and I always seem fine after runs but now I’ve seen what it was on that running machine I wonder if I need to start monitoring it.

I did find that machine hard and I was really hot so I wonder if normally it would be lower?

From what you’ve said it can fluctuate so maybe i’ll just carry on as I am and maybe check it periodically on the treadmill.

Thanks for your help. Just heading out for my 9k. Hope it goes as well as last week 🤞

175 is not too high. Don’t worry about it.

Great thank you so much. I was a bit worried!

Hi Rainbow - can't really help other than to say that I am 54, have been back running for 4 and a half years now (used Couchto 5k and have since run up to half marathon distance) and have never gone down this route! In fact I know it would probably make me worry unduly! My old Garmin does not measure heart rate and I have no plans to upgrade! Each to their own, I guess - I know some on here have trained using Heart rate zones but it is not for me. Just wanted to give another perspective! Happy running! 🙂

Thanks Sandra that’s helpful. I wasn’t interested for training purposes it was more about not having a heart attack! 😂. I guess I’ll just keep going as I am the.

I feel fine and definitely better than when I couldn’t complete a 1 min run back in June. I think I’m in your camp and will just keep plodding along.

All my stretching done now so out I go into the lovely fresh air which I appreciate even more having tried the gym!!

Have a happy day.

If it feels too tough - slow down a bit

If it feels good - enjoy...or go faster!!

Works for me!!😉

in reply toSandraj39

Exactly that’s what I usually do and we all know how we feel.

Just managed a 10k! 😊

Basically treat all heart rate data as only approximate and compare it with what you know is normal for you, not what some theory says it should be. And even then be aware there can be blips: sometimes the sensor picks up your running cadence by mistake. This is especially awkward for me as my running cadence and heart rate are often around the same number anyway! Also it depends on the device: when I switched from Fitbit to Garmin my heart rate dropped about ten points! Same technology but different algorithms for processing the data. No idea which is more accurate but not worried, because as others have said my body will soon let me know if I’m doing too much. Heart rate data has some benefits but worrying unduly about a random number now and again isn’t necessary. Listen to your body.

Thank you ArthurJG. I’m not going to worry about it. I know if I’m pushing myself too much.

It was just tempting to hold onto the cool handles of the running machine when in a very hot gym but then wish I hadn’t 😂

Ah it was the treadmill handle not a watch sensor. That’s even less accurate. Depending on your age the number might not be that high anyway but it’s not a reliable number in the first place.

I don’t monitor my heart rate, but I do pay attention to how I feel, and how quickly I recover. I would do that rather than worrying about heart rate. Try to run at a pace where you feel ok and can get out short sentences. If you are all settled down within a couple of minutes you are recovering well.

Thank you. That’s my conclusion really but good to have it confirmed. Thank you.

Do you wear a fitness tracker watch? You can get heart rate metrics on there. You maximum heart rate (when you really push yourself hard) would around this number... 220 - Your age. So tots would be 168 beats per minute.

in reply toJaoJao

Thanks, no I don’t I just happened to be on a running machine so I held onto the bars to see what it would be. Also it was cool metal and I was seriously hot!!

It wasn’t a good run. Really hot and boring but useful over the winter. Next time I’ll pick a machine near a window I can open 😊

It’s not a mad thing to train at your maximum heart rate, it’s a good workout for your heart and lungs x

There is aloof of stuff out there on heart rate and a lot of athletes use it to train. If you are worried about your heart, see your GP. Otherwise go by how you feel and keep your breathing under control, ie don’t go hell for leather.

in reply toju-ju-

Thanks. I have never felt worried but when I checked it on the running machine it just seemed high. I am a slow and steady runner so no chance of me going hell for leather!🤣
