What?? New shoes? Perfect weather? What can possibly go wrong??

I knew this morning when I had planned run 2 in my gorgeous new Cloudflyers, which I have to say are everything I’d hoped they’d be. I took them out on their maiden voyage on Saturday evening, the sunset was beautiful, the towpath (my fav route at the moment) Bevlar bridge looked wonderful, i even took a photo of my foot in the air showing off my new shoes in front of Bevlar bridge but it looked like I’d fallen in the bushes so I deleted it...I should’ve kept it coz it’d made you laugh...and I covered a blissful 7kms, I thought to myself that this was going to be my future runs forever...until this morning, like I said, I’d planned to go this morning before anyone else was awake but I knew, when I turned over in bed, that my heart wasn’t in it today...how can this be when those trainers are waiting for you downstairs??? So, I got up, pulled on my running gear, went downstairs & had a brew, which is something I never do so I knew I was stalling...ok, long run has now changed to short run over in the park. My purple babies were waiting for their outing like the dog sits at the back door waiting for his lamppost sniffing missions, they still felt so good when I put them on...headphones in & I headed out of the door, waved hello to my neighbour Dave the joiner, crossed the road & into the park, positively springing in these new shoes...gets to the path..oh ohhhhhh, too slippy with black ice...that was like a sign, “huh, can’t run on this” so I walked out of the other end of the park, over the fjord & up to the main road....turn left & head home or turn right & run?? My head & heart turned left but my feet turned right, so running it was. I’d chosen Laura’s stamina podcast but then I thought I needed more than her this morning (no offence Laura but sometimes you just don’t cut it x) so I changed to the dulcet tones of, yes, you guessed it, Mr Smooth....W9r3, I skipped the 5 min warm up because I’d already had a walk & a skate through the park, chose some very decent tunes with Hidden ’s SKA Spotify playlist & my trot began...then stopped...then started...then stopped, honestly, I was like a car on the M62, I had a few steps walk every few minutes..I waved at my friend John the other joiner who shouted “I’m tired just watching you” as he disappeared into the merchants, that put that ‘power of an audience’ strength into my body & for the next 1.5k I ran well...but I just could not get into the swing of it this morning, the gremlins were waiting for me in FULL Halloween costumes today & it worked...that was not the hearts & flowers run I’d hoped it would be...so now I’m home, with my brew, haven’t even got any rich teas so I’ve had to settle for digestives...the day can only get better....pffffttttt

Hope you have a better run than me if you’re out there today xx

Black ice does not sound good Mummycav. A wise move to get out of that park.

I had a pfft run today too but I’ve had so many highs lately I was due one.

UpTheStanley will probably be posting on that one!

I bet you loved wearing those purple shoes though. 🏃‍♀️👟

well you did a lot better than I did this morning: awake. cozy bed. 30 mins later. Today Programme fascinating. time to get up for work. hope your day's improving safe in the knowledge you did at least run. and there's nothing shameful about 1.5k.

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate10 in reply to Tallismorley

Thank you Tallismorley ...I actually managed 3.1kms altogether but not constantly...my thinking is, that at this stage I should be running at least 5kms none stop, every run but that’s not always the case, it’s just a bit disappointing when a run is like this but I would never not say because it’s just as important to share a bad run as it is to share a good one x

I think it's fine to do short runs some days. We feel different on different days but at least we're still getting out and doing exercise. Always nice to read others' stories too. I'm not very good at posting my own I'm afraid. I finished couch25k in August and since then have just had the aim of keeping up a 30 min run 3 times a week, and not worrying about distance. Strava tells me my distances are slightly creeping up, and I reckon if I'm still doing this 6 months after couch25k i'll be doing ok. And then I can think about a new goal.

Sounds good Tallismorely!😃

I, too, I’m doing 30 minutes three times a week and have discovered an episode of desert island discs is perfect to cover the run and the five minute walk at each end. With over 2000 episodes to choose from I have plenty of entertainment lined up! 😀

Ooo, sounds good

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate10 in reply to Tallismorley

That’s def a good plan & 30 mins 3 times a week is a great plan...

I always post when a run isn’t what it should be because it’s important to let others know that if they’ve had a bad run, they’re not alone & that it’s ok x

A run is a run, MC! At least you got out there, and it will all go to building your running legs, you know that. :-) But I do understand the disappointment when you intend one thing, and that it doesn't quite happen. No rhyme nor reason to it sometimes. I have gone out full of beans some days and not managed more than 3k and even then it felt awful. Next run, I manage 10km and love every minute! I don't understand it...pffft. But you should feel good for getting out there and stretching your legs in your lovely new clouds. :-) I am starting to worry about winter a bit. Cold I can handle, wind and rain I can handle, but I cannot run on icy pavements. Aaaaaagh. xxx

Me too - the thought of icy pavements fills me with horror! 😱

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate10 in reply to Sadie-runs

I know Sadie but you know when you question yourself? It hasn’t happened for a while & I was surprised and disappointed with myself this morning...but next run will be different I’m sure.

Ooo yes, icy pavements make me shudder x

I read somewhere that the most important runs are the ones you don’t want to go on. You went out and did what you needed to. Hoping the next one is a fun one.! 🏃‍♀️🙂

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate10 in reply to Decker

Aw thanks Decker , I can always rely on you to say the right thing 😉

...you know what I mean though when you just want & expect good runs but it doesn’t work like that does it?? When will I learn this??!! 🙄 x

Well done for running at all Mummycav, I think I would've turned and headed for home as soon as I saw the ice! Such perseverance 💪

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate10 in reply to MutleyShuffle

Thank you MutleyShuffle , I HATE ice, terrifies me coz if I fall I won’t beable to run at all & that would tick me right off!! 😝

I understand your trepidation with the ice! After my nasty fall on the ice last year, I'm not sure how I'll fair when the ice returns. So good on you for getting out and getting a run in, even if it was a pffft run. I'm sure the next one will be better.

Mummycav profile image

Oo, I remember that too, yikes, scares me to death...thanks SaskAlliecat , hopefully better next time x

Ooh, ice. I’d forgotten about that. Skidded over to land gently on my bottom last December on ice. No harm done.

Well done for getting out. You impressed your neighbours (and you impress us!).

Aw, thank you JaySeeSkinny and thank goodness you weren’t injured, must be made of strong stuff! I think the gremlins were out in full force this morning & they kind of won 😐

I’ve had cuts and bruises from falls, but never actually done any real damage. And I fall over quite regularly. Although I have got better. I know the places where the pavements are uneven or a tree root is lurking under the leaves!

Oh black ice!!! My worst nightmare. Bad enough when driving but even worse when running!! I came across a stretch on my run yesterday evening as I was going round the sports pitches.(Timed it just as the young lads were leaving their training so I had an audience as minced about trying to avoid slipping over!!!! Luckily all was good and I didn’t hear any comments!!!!) Hope your next run goes better for you!! 😀🏃‍♀️❄️

You ended up getting out there, despite not being so positive upon waking. Your new clouds were clearly eager to take you for a run, haha, but it's okay, things don't always go as you'd like, despite wanting to get out there. You're doing far more than me, I haven't run for a month, I just wish I could make the time, but it's impossible lately, oh how I'd love some free time.

Look forward to a better run next time, it's bound to be a good one Bev 😁 xx

Thank you Beth..if I lived nearer I would help you out so you could have some run time xxx I feel bad now for not having a good run when there’s people desperate to go xx

Don't you dare feel bad Bev, that would make me feel bad then, there's loads that can't make it out so don't you worry about that. I'm happy to listen to your achievements and running experiences whether they're positive or not so positive, that's what our running journey is about. So promise me you won't feel bad now? 😊😘

I'll get out there at some point, it's lovely reading yours and the experience of the other lovely runners on here, I get such inspiration from you Olldfloss, Sadie, Neil, all the new graduates, as you all inspire me to conjure up my next run. YOU LOT KEEP ME GOING 👆😜🙂😁😊❤️😘

Hope this has no errors as I've typed it without me goggles on 🤣🤣 xxxx

Oh gosh you! Time to relax and just regroup...Black Ice is horrendous... and so dangerous too.. ... ( I remember a Bambi incident one frosty morning... )!

Maybe..just maybe your body was telling you something this morning before you even went out... you could have been slightly under par... a little bug or tiredness... ? But you decided to head out and you had some successful bursts. Well done you!

Just take your time..be kind to yourself..maybe relax some of the runs into shorter , faster runs ( when there is no ice).. and then the 5Ks and then a lovely longer run?

Don't doubt yourself.. you know you are strong, we know you are strong and you know and we know... the runner that you are xxx

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate10 in reply to Oldfloss

Thankyou Oldfloss for your kind words...I think I am maybe feeling a bit down...you remember when I lost my friend? It’s 12 months ago today, the year has flown by & she has been on my mind this week so that’s prob it...I think that self-doubt must be part of life, it’s def part of mine!

Your plan sounds like a good one for me, easing back in rather than throwing myself back in after my ankle misery...my ‘knee’ (without the cap!) is painful today so I am resting up xx

Elfe5 profile image
Elfe560minGraduate

Oh sympathy Mummycav. 😘

I had a similar experience last week - I simply fizzled our like a damp firework after 17mins & trudged the rest of the way back home feeling despondent. On reflection, I realised that I had had very little sleep the night before and rabbit food for lunch. The next run was fine. 😄

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate10 in reply to Elfe5

Thankyou Elfe5 , it’s easy to forget that diet/sleep/worry all affect our runs, there’s nothing worse than that feeling though & the self-doubt that follows xx

Got a stupid runny nose and month end fatigue, could do with a run to get away from 2 hour conference call with shared service centre god they know how to push my buttons just do it the way we pay you to do it!!! 🤬🤬 but guessing if not on top form run will not really be best option so think am gonna settle for a large gin and an early night! 🤣🤣😊 sure your next outing with your lovely purples will be better!

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate10 in reply to Polly2810

Thankyou Polly2810 , all these things do affect a run & like I said earlier, it’s easy to forget that! 2 hour conference call sounds like a nightmare! Hope you enjoyed your gin & early night x

Polly2810 profile image
Polly2810 in reply to Mummycav

Indeed I did but absolutely streaming today just getting through core hours was a struggle...so no run tonight either. Even larger gin and earlier night methinks! 🤣🤣

Slinkymalinki profile image
SlinkymalinkiGraduate10

But you went out! Yay!! This is GOOD even if it didn't turn out as you had hoped. I actually think it was sensible to be wary of the ice. You know you're a great runner and there will better runs to come. Plus you can turn up 'Smug Mode' to 10 as you have gorgeous new Cloudflyers! Much as I'm loving my new Hokas, I'm still coveting the Cloudflyers but can't justify the expense....yet....! Xx

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate10 in reply to Slinkymalinki

Thank you slinky-malinki , yes, I still went out and a bad run is better than no run I suppose, even though it doesn’t feel like it!

I tried some hokas & I liked them...I got a real bargain with these cloudflyers though and who doesn’t love a bargain? X

Slinkymalinki profile image
SlinkymalinkiGraduate10 in reply to Mummycav

Oooh! I'm Mrs Cut Price all the time! Where did you get them from - if you don't mind sharing the bargain?!

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate10 in reply to Slinkymalinki

I got them from On’s website...they were supposed to be 80 quid, which is a good price for them anyway, but the pair I originally ordered were out of stock but On forgot to email me or refund my money so when I rang chasing them up, they said if I ordered some more they’d give me a 20% discount code, so I ordered the same but in a different colour....so they only cost £64!! 😉 x

Slinkymalinki profile image
SlinkymalinkiGraduate10 in reply to Mummycav

Wow! Now that is quite a bargain! I'll keep an eye on their website and get my sizing right for possible sales buying at the end of the year!

Sometimes the trainers develop leaden soles and there’s not much you can do about it. I used to stress but now I think its running karma in some sense - some days you feel the love others you don’t. But Hallowe’en has gone now - so get sparkly with a Guy Fawkes run and create those sparks in gorgeous trainers.
