Morning my lovely virtual army of running friends!
So... long story short... the last time I ran was Friday. I did my glorious 8k, which I loved. No problems, no issues, legs felt good afterwards.
Sunday was due to be my 5k to finish the week. During the warmup walk, I noticed a little discomfort in both thighs, but after starting the run proper, I very quickly decided it would be wise to stop and walk home. I never do this. I can't remember the last time I abandoned a run like that. But - I was feeling quite sharp pain in my thighs now, and decided that although I probably could have run through it, that would just be daft, so feeling like a puppy who's human had just noticed what it had done enderneath the dining table, I walked home slowly, tail between my legs, feeling defeated, deflated, and like a failure.
8k is the furthest I have ever run, and I felt really good after it, so this has come up totally out of the blue, I was't expecting that, as my legs, I thought, were feeling better than ever. It's most odd though, I have no pain whatsoever unless I try to run, which is not good. I do keep trying little test runs, and I mean like 20m, but as soon as I start running, the pain starts.
My theory is that my body just wasn't up for 8k, and is just taking a little longer to fix all those microtears that happen. I'm not a doctor though, so I shall go and see my doctor if this doesn't clear up pretty soon. Till then though, I very much fear that I'm sitting on the edge of the injury couch. At least I have a cup of tea though. Mug half full and all that.
Watch out though Sadie-runs , you can't keep me down for long!!
Oh no! I found after my first 7k I needed at least 2 days before the next run. Now on Ju-ju’s plan I’m doing my longest run the Mon and 5k the Thursday.
I’m sure another days rest will sort your legs out. 🤞 😊
Best treating yourself to a physio visit. microtears as you put it from exertion shouldn't cause pain. At worst just the dull soft ache from having done something. Pain is almost always worth getting checked. Tightness and knots I'd say massage and stretching but actual pain, see someone.
Honestly, Neil, i would see your doctor anyway, or a physio as Mike suggests (if you can afford it - I can't!)
Oh Neil, do not despair, these things are sent to try us, and you are an experienced runner now, who knows that a little time in the IC is not the end of your glorious running career. (This is from a gal that has come back from both a hamstring strain and a calf strain!)
Like the others, I would urge a GP visit. At least, make the appointment now – and if you don't need it when the time comes just cancel. Out of curiosity, Is it front of legs (i.e. quads) or backs (hamstrings?) Upper or lower leg?
I do not expect you will be down for long! Just make sure you don't get too glum about this, okay? I can be a bit of a drama queen when injury stops me from running, so I do understand how you feel.
Never ceases to amaze me how clever these people are.
Must be the knowledge and training now and GP’s just have so much other stuff.
In this area we can self refer to physio.Pensioners have to wait, but for those working and driving the economy, like you my friend, immediate attention and rightly so ,get you up and at it again, and running of course.
Atb Neil.
Well done on not running through the pain Neil. I know that sense of failure but I'm learning lots from my perch on the IC couch. Stretches, strengthening exercises, Pilates, hydration, foam rolling and even protein. And the importance of rest days (and maybe more than one). Keep us posted
You did the right think in not pushing through it, Neil - I think having the discipline to recognize when it's time to rein in our enthusiasm is so important (I am rubbish at this). I hope it turns out to be nothing, and that you were just in need of a little more rest, but do get it checked out anyway.
Good call to stop Neil, may have prevented a more serious concern. I have to agree that "pain" needs checking out. I hope that a few days rest will see you on the mend.
I hated the IC with a passion so understand if you are feeling a little deflated but your army of friends are close by. Take good care
It's awful when you feel below par and even worse when bits seem to be broken or not working right. Rest, first and foremost and then address it as you feel fit.
If we want to get the most out of our bodies we must listen when its telling us things! 👍😉
