So today I decided to do the 7km run of week 3 of ju-ju’s 10k programme. Not trusting either Strava or Map My Run, I fired both up and headed to a favourite route through woodland. It was a glorious run, the perfect temperature at 15 degrees and a light drizzle. I set a pretty slow, steady pace and stuck to it, and got into a lovely rhythm. Ignore my pace in the pictures - clearly wrong!
Map My Run went totally haywire on me, at one point just shouting random stats at me continuously. Strava refuses to tell me anything and will only give me the distance once I save the run. So, I either ran almost 11k or 6.9k! LOL! I am inclined to believe Strava today, as I was running around 45 mins. I ran for a bit longer after stopping and saving, to get to 7k. But who knows? How far I am running is anyone’s guess these days! 😂
Getting a Garmin for my birthday. Until then, I shall be enjoying running random distances it seems!
Happy Sunday all.

Well, just looked and splits are totally out of whack too. 😕 I was actually running for 45 mins, as I checked my wrist watch at beginning and end of run.
That's amazing Tbae that you completed a 10k this morning, well done, I wish you all the best of luck for your HM in 7 weeks. Although tomorrow I complete C25K, the last 30 minute run of week 9, I won't have run 5k, let alone 10k or a half marathon. I will probably run about 4 kilometres or slightly more in that time.
Thanks, I have an older Smartphone, it is not compatible with those newer apps, I use the RUN-LOG.COM app for my running it tells me distance, duration, pace, speed and calories.
Looking at your pictures I am guessing you have an iPhone. Depending on the model the GPS accuracy will I guess be different. The newer the model the better (at least in theory).
I used an iPhone 6S with Strava and Runtastic before getting my watch and never had this sort of discrepancy. I know looking at my watch on a run that sometimes it seems to lose GPS signal based upon where I am running but then picks it up and it all gets smoothed out over the run.
When you run the app it might be worth leaving one of them in the foreground also you could look at background app refresh for them. I don't think it should make a difference but until your birthday wish comes true you could give it a try.
Other than that well done on your run whatever the distance.
Hi Richard! Thanks for the tips. I am using an iPhone 6S. Have used Map My Run for 9’months with no blips, so it is a bit of a mystery as to why it is happening now! Strava doing the same, so am concerned it is a phone / GPS issue. Downloaded Runkeeper and going to try that next. Pretty soon will have worked my way through every known app available 😂😂😂
Yeah I settled on Strava having noticed it referenced by the Parkruns so figured it must be good. Ironically I still haven't done a Parkrun but I liked Runkeeper - Map My Run just seemed to be full of Banners if I remember. One thing I liked about Strava over Runkeeper was that when you go into Strava it does not activate GPS until you start your run, with Runkeeper it starts GPS straight away. Whatever you do you can export your data in GPX format and import into the other service normally. That's what I did when I moved from Runkeeper to Strava.
You can also use map my run on a computer to plan a route. It shows you the length (and elevation too which I now always use having found myself setting out down a long long steep hill once on holiday ... with the inevitable painful return!). mapmyrun.com/routes/create/
Remember to uncheck 'auto-follow roads' when your route is off-road or it will send you all around the houses!
Trusty Garmin will put it all right, although I had a few teething problems but that was just because I couldn't be arsed to read the instructions Sounds like you are flying round though and having a great time, what more could you ask for on any run? Glad you've found your mojo again
I managed a slow 5k today, first time in 3 months, so I am also well chuffed! Hopefully it won't be too long before I'm running along after you, although you will be a speck in the distance compared to my times! xx
I can never be arsed to read instructions! So expect much hilarity to ensue once I get a Garmin. 😂 Mojo on fire right now and am full of the joys, ‘‘tis true. My speed has now become a thing of legend; sadly I suspect more of an admin error because of dodgy apps.
Woo hoo! Well done your 5k lovely lady! I am so happy for you. Keep plugging away, slowly and steadily! I miss you, my running chum. 😘
Ah thanks Sadie x I am quietly hopeful that relatively normal service will be resumed in a matter of weeks. Good luck with your next run.
Hi Sadie, brilliant 10.8k, see, I just knew you’d graduate before me! Seriously though, that tech is screwed up isn’t it? The important thing is that you are running, and enjoying it. I’m so glad for you.
Are we really the terror team now? 😂 That’s definitely not my influence!!!
Ha ha 😂😂😂 I just charted the run online and I can confirm that, according to my route, I did run 7km. Phew! I bloody loved this run, despite the tech issues. Forgot how much I love running in light rain 🌧, so refreshing.
Blame Tbae for that name! I have no idea why the terror! Unless this is short for “terrific”? 😁
tech troubles abound! It sounds like you'll make good use of your Garmin. I know we should usually advocate not worrying about stats but it's rather helpful to know how far you've run especially when on a plan for a distance, eh!
Plus, I'm terrible at judging how far a route is, so if I want to run for about 30 min and I want to run different routes I have to plan somehow, so that MapMyRun online planner (others are available) comes in handy. Also to assess elevation when running new roads, as linda9389 says!
Nice run though, sounds delightful - the conditions I had been hoping to run in this morning! But I was later out than you!
Yes, it was just starting to get warmer as I ended my run, so I was lucky. Normally I don’t give too much of a hoot about distance, but it is very grrrrrr that I am having these issues just as I really need to know how far I am going.
That online route planner is fab! I just got lost down a rabbit hole with it this afternoon, planning a long run in Battersea Park. 😁 I have also mapped out next weeks long run of 8k (eeeeek).
Thank you, you too! I've also been planning a run somewhere new/old - from my parents' house, which I don't visit often enough. Hugely useful. Your progress is fab, keep it up, keep blazing away ahead (so we can follow)!
Oh! You are Beckenham lass too?! I have not heard of the Memorial Run, shall look it up. But the route could be a good one for my 10k graduation run. This park is just beautiful, and they are building a wild swimming lake in it now. 😁 x
Oooh you’re on!! Although I need to clarify I haven’t run it before! I only started running recently and did my first 10K a few weeks ago so this all new territory for me but I love the idea of doing it with a fellow forum girl!!
I have not run any race before! And I have not yet run 10k - but we have until November...lots of time to get more km on the legs. It could be fun! 😁 And we get to support each other. 👍
Not yet - but once I have done this 10k programme I might! You want to do it? Looks like a nice course.
When I have problems, usually drop outs, I've been told to restart the phone which does something to the GPS signal. Might help, might not, but worth a try. To check the distance you can log into MapMyRun and create the route. You know the duration so it'll be easy to calculate your pace. Best done on a laptop or pc though as it's tricky to get the hang of. Once you do that you'll see which is closest and go with that one in future. 😊
Just checked this out and was quite surprised it was recorded and fairly accurate. For some reason though it saw my warm up walk as part of the run, but the cool down as a walk!
