lumpectomy vs mastectomy for invasive ductal carcinoma
Hi bajaj, there is so many study conducted on the same and they found that there is no difference in survival rate mastectomy vs lumpectomy more ever it depends on tumor size, and there is some circumstances in which dr, can not perform mastectomy, like in the case of multi-centric tumor or tumor is greater than 5 cm....but i would suggest better your dr. will decide which option is best for you.
Hi vbajaj as Manish has said it depends on the case to case. If you share more in details may be you will get a more correct answer from the members of this forum
vbajaj,
When we compare lumpectomy (with radiation therapy) versus mastectomy, there is a slightly increased risk of the disease coming back in the breast which is saved. But the chance that the disease will come back in other organs (like liver, lungs, bone etc.) is the same irrespective of lumpectomy or mastectomy. Survival is very much the same, be it BCS or be it Mastectomy.
So, if given a choice, I will definitely suggest lumpectomy and axillary clearance where it is feasible. And in my clinical practice, a significant number of surgery is Breast Conserving Surgery.
The important thing about Breast Conserving Surgery is selecting the right candidate.
So go ahead and plan for BCS for your Mom, if feasible. Please do not have any worries in your mind at all.
