information about Her2 type

Hello- I am writing in regards to my mother who is now in her 70’s with second occurrence of breast cancer. She just found out it is Her2 type and radiologist told her today it was a cancer 3 aggressive type. Does anyone have any information or experience with this type that you would feel okay sharing? I am trying to give her the best support but is hard as she lives far from me. She has had colon cancer at a young age and now breast cancer twice. She suffered terribly through chemo and I hate for her to suffer again. It has been very hard on her body and bones. She was diagnosed with osteoporosis also young in her 40’s that is just getting worse. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Absentmind, your mother is lucky to have you to care for her. Do you go along to the hospital appointments with her? She needs someone there possibly to take notes and so on.

Those professionals caring for her are the best people to give advice and help in her particular circumstances.

In the UK she would usually be allocated a breast cancer nurse to whom she or tou could chat, and there are several cancer charities. I realise you probably don’t have this resource but the worldwide web is a great help - try MacMillan website for starters

Her2+ve is an aggressive form of breast cancer so often grade 3. It was discovered in 2001 and treatment with herceptin and perjeta have transformed outcome. I was grade 3 her2+ve and am well 6.5 years later.

Oh your poor Mum she has been through it. Tough to be facing cancer treatment third time round. What I can say is HER2 positive is not the doomed out come it once was. Herceptin has transformed this. I am still in remission 8 years later.

The treatment for your Mum will also look at what they treated her with previously. The best person to advise her and you will be her Oncologist. It's really important she has someone there with her when her options are discussed. My son recorded the conversation and typed notes up which was a great idea. He took his laptop and used the record feature.

Your Mums case is complex because of her history. Hope she is seen soon by her Oncologist. Hugs xxx
