Hi, I'm Sandy I've recently had a left sided mastectomy and reconstruction using the LD Flap on the 7th Jan, my lymph nodes were clear but they found 72mm of precancer and two tumours of invasive cancer. Apparently my cancer is abnormal in that there was so much prefer cancer, they don't know whether to give me chemo so waiting on the results of a Oncotype test, it's only been a week since they sent the tissue sample and I get the results next Thurs...it feels like it's been forever, I just want to know one or another if I'm to go through chemo, I'm trying to prepare myself but finding it hard to do so.!

I took part in the Oncotype trial, it worked for me, the Consultant wrote it down like a family tree, and it gave me a one in three chance of missing out on chemo, the results came back later than they had planned, but when my research nurse rang and said 'no chemo' it was an amazing feeling, this was at the end of 2013, and I signed up in the hope that in the future some ladies would be told they only need radiotherapy and hormone tablets, I'll keep everything crossed for you x

You were part of the trial they were running until, I think the end if 2013. Since then, NICE has agreed to pay for it so it's no longer a trial.

Hi Rebec, yes I signed up when they were running a trial to see if it worked, this was in November 2013, when my research nurse rang me in December 2015 to see how I'm doing I asked if the test is now being routinely carried out for patients, who like me, may not need chemo, and she said it was, so you are quite correct that NICE have approved it, because it would have been proved to work, x

Hi Sandy

I had mastectomy in October on right side. My cancer was only 1.5cm but after 3 ops they couldn't get a clear margin so I had mastectomy and there was over 6cm of pre cancer cells. I was offered chemo and decided to go for it but was terrified. It was the one thing I was hoping not to have. However my oncologist put me on a lower dose weekly for 13 weeks. It wasn't fun but nowhere near as bad as I expected. The chemo unit I went to was great, lovely staff and we always had a laugh. I've finished now. I still have hair although it's thin. I think sometimes the anticipation is the worst thing. Once it starts, you just get on with it and it's worth it in the end. Good luck!
