Hi. Has anybody got Diverticulosis and how were you treated. It showed up on a Ct scan and now the Doctor wants to do a colonoscopy. Having looked on the internet this seems over the top. It says on there that this can be treated with a diet or antibiotics. I am 63. Many thanks.

Hi Zen, I too have diverticulosis and I’m aged 64. Like you, I had a scan and I then went for the colonoscopy. I do think it was helpful having the colonoscopy because it revealed the full extent of the diverticulosis but also, identified that I had a polyps, which was removed at the time and sent for analysis. As for the diet and antibiotics senario; because I had the colonoscopy and the full extent of my condition was outlined, my GP has informed me that if/when I have a reoccurrence of symptoms and I’m in agony for 5 days due to infection, I can receive a course of antibiotics to help fight the infection (as we know, GPs are under instruction to limit prescribing antibiotics because of over use). The diet option is far more difficult to get to grips with. Finding my/your trigger foods is not easy as all meals are made up of combinations of ingredients so I’m making slow progress. Hope this helps in some way!

Hi Rosy 300. Many thanks for your reply. Could I ask if your polyps showed up on the ct scan?

Hi Zen, mmmmh difficult to answer because both procedures happened within days of each other. I do know when I received the Consultant’s letter following all the procedures, it stated that the scan didn’t reveal any further anomalies than they already knew. Also, I should add, when the Consultant was performing the colonoscopy he made the observation that I had a polyps, so I’m guessing, prior to the actual procedure, he was unaware. R

Thanks Rosy, I have to get back to my Doctor. I think she said that polyps do not show on a ct scan. I just do not like the idea of a colonoscopy. I pay for treatment here in the Philippines and its a business. They seem really keen on performing procedures. Thanks again.

Can I ask what anyone's symptoms of diverticulosis are? I have been diagnosed with this on a laparoscopy but I have severe diarrhea, colitis, right sided pain so have to have a colonoscopy. Not sure if they are symptoms of this or something else?
