Just got latest dexa scan results. My lumbar spine is - 3.3 but both my femurs are fine. Anyone else have such results? Hard to figure out how one part of body can be so badly affected & other part is fine 🙆

I am not very good at all of this but when I saw my consultant she said she could not understand why my spine was so bad but not my hips.T-4.5 spine #T9 L2

T-2.0 hip

This is what she wrote down for me. Over the years I have done 6 Edinburgh moonwalks and 4 Glasgow kiltwalks. She said that all the walking could explain it. She also said that I would have to have inherited the osteoporosis and that it is very severe. I have been on the Movymia ( Teriparatide) injections for 6 months now.

I am not sure if any of the above answer your question

Hi ,I think others on this forum have had similar results. I went from having osteopanenia to having a collapsed vertebrae T10 last year , so my spinal score like yours was poor. The other parts of the scan not .It's making changes to support the problem that will help.

It is quite a shock at first and you are younger than me , I hope you have been referred to the fracture prevention service for the way forward ,ROS have lots of advice and you have to work out what is best for you. It seems everyone has a different approach so it's a bit of a journey. All the best .

DXA scans are dependent on skilled operators making sure that you're placed correctly on the scan table. Also, if you have kyphosis (and I don't know if you do if course), this can lead to the spinal result being worse than it actually is. I have some kyphosis so I decided to have a REMS scan privately (not widely available yet in the UK though and isn't available on the NHS) as this is less dependent on you being placed correctly. My spinal score was better on this scan than the DXA scan and the hip scores were consistent with the spinal ones. I don't know if this explains the difference in your scores but it's a factor to bear in mind.

Hello, I am the other way round. My spine is -0.3 but my femur is - 3.2. I do a lot of cycling and apparently that might have had an impact on my hip bones.. but it seems a big difference.

Goodness, would have thought that would make them better. The exercise.

Hi. For the spine my t score is -3.7 and z score is -2.6. My femur has osteopenia. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis last summer and am 59. A total shock especially the z score which compares me to my age group. I’m assuming that there will be osteoporosis elsewhere too. Exercise might have helped my femur a nurse said.

It makes no sense to me. My spinal score is -2.8 yet I have 6 spinal fractures. My hips are normal.

It's the strangest thing, I'm in the same boat, my readings aren't bad at all, lumber T -1 Z 0.6

Total hip -1

Femoral neck -1.5 Z 0-1

Yet I fractured 2 new ones and refractured an old one just by turning round🤷

It's bizarre and very scary. I also have ulcerative colitis and apparently there is a link with osteoporosis but my IBD consultant has never mentioned it or anything I could have done to mitigate it.

Good morning, I had Dexa scan in 2022 and 2024 both were more than 1 deg different from each other and so I suspected a placement error as the readings should be similar and so went for a REMS scan privately with Mr Nick Birch, Osteoscan whereupon they were similar, came home very reassured as he has no affiliation to any drug companies, with plenty of information to move forward with confidence. Osteoporosis does not affect just one area of bone. I would encourage you to ask questions.

Yes it was the same for me, I felt much more reassured after the scan. It's also a comfort knowing he's an orthopaedic surgeon.
