Hi everyone,

In case you haven't checked out our website: theros.org.uk/

We just wanted to share our latest Bone Matters session with you:

youtu.be/RRAYYT9vhP4

We hear from a specialist doctor and a dentist about osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). It’s a very rare side effect of some osteoporosis medications but it raises many questions and concerns. We tackle some of the misconceptions like not being able to have a tooth out if you take these drugs or never starting a medication unless you go to the dentist first. We provide the facts so you are better informed, can take your medication with confidence and can also get the dental care you need.

All the very best,

Lulu

Thank you for this talk on ONJ. I was hoping to learn if once you have had ONJ should you ever consider going back on these drugs? It has been about 10 years since a failed root canal and tooth extraction resulted in ONJ. I stopped Prolia immediately, and I think/know suffered the rebound effect. I am having a bone density scan next week, but I already know from previous scans, that I have Osteoporosis...and arthritis. It is tempting to consider these drugs again... but I am scared. Is there any research on the increased likelihood of developing ONJ a second time?

One never really knows when tooth surgery is necessary - My last two root canals resulted in the dentist unintentionally cracking the tooth due to calcified roots, they say, and I needing unplanned tooth extractions.

If there is any research to help determine that if you have suffered ONJ once that it is always in your system, and you will likely get ONJ a second time if you go on these drugs and need an extraction? ...I fear my generation are guinea pigs, and one one yet knows these answers Plus, I bet many of these problems go undocumented, because dentists don't report them.

Sorry, I'm venting my anger and frustration,

Barb Shockey

It's very understandable the way you've noted you're feeling. Although we're unable to have specific discussions on here, we would warmly invite you to reach out to our helpline of specialist nurses who would be able to chat it through: theros.org.uk/information-a...

Wishing you all the best,

thank you for putting this on - your webinars are always so informative. I’ve had one successful extraction whilst on AA but decided against an implant for fear of ONJ - although the risk is low I could be amongst that small percentage who suffer ….
