osteoporosis & medication

Following a Dexa Scan, I have been diagnosed with Osteoporosis and Osteopenia. At the moment I am awaiting to see my doctor this week to discuss. I have a hiatus hernia, so I believe some medication may not be suitable, is there anyone that has the same problem and what medication have they been given.

I've only just been diagnosed, doctor gave me adcal to take each day and alendronic acid once a week. I too have a hiatus hernia and so far I've had no problems with the tablets, the painkillers after my fractures did flare the hernia. I take the a-a ones with loads of water and wait at least half an hour before having a brew ( I hate Wednesdays 😄). I'm sure your doctor will discuss alternatives if he thinks tablets might not be right for you. Good luck

Hi Nadjio thank you so much for your positive response. I know nothing about osteoporosis. I had surgery in July for a broken wrist and it was a friend that advised me to talk to the doctor about a Dexa Scan. Nobody tells you.

Yes I had fractures in my back, happened while I was on holiday early August. When I got home I had to ask for Dexa scan, but wouldn't refer me until I'd had x-rays to confirm fractures even though I'd had MRI scan whilst abroad. I wasn't put on the alendronic acid until 3 weeks ago, it took that long for x-rays and scan results to come back!

Hi RalphyDog - I have the same conditions and have been put onto Prolia. Apart from feeling tired the following day no other reactions. Good luck.

Thank you so much ABwn, it’s always good to hear recommendations from people who suffer from the same problems.

I have the same problem. I was given Alendronic acid to start with. Just one tablet and I was violently sick. I’ve always suffered with reflux all my life.

I was then given Terraparatide for two years then Denosumab after. There is controversy about Denosumab as I think there is with most meds but it suits me fine. I was just thankful there is help out there as my bone score was so bad. I’ve been on that for three or four years with no problems. What I say is whatever is recommended give it a try because until you do you don’t know if it suits you or not.
