Bunions

Could anybody suggest things to do in order to stop a bunion in its tracks. It is starting to affect the things that I do. I have stopped high impact exercise classes and only now do slower classes where I have bare feet. I walk my dog alot too so definitely don't want that to stop. I do all I can to help it, but what do people think about operating on it? Ahhhh ... it's so annoying 🙈

My husband had a bunion that was beginning to affect his balance. He’s now seeing a physio who has given him foot strengthening exercises which he says should avoid an operation. It will probably take a year. After 5 months his feet are much stronger and less painful. Wider (very wide) shoes and orthotics also helping. But it depends on how calcified the bunion is he was told.

I hear you. I have one bunion from dancing for many years, but it doesn't give me trouble these days. Ballroom dance shoes need to be correctly fitted to prevent bunions forming on the standing foot, (usually the left foot for a female.)

I would suggest seeing a physiotherapist first; there are various bunion trainers you can buy to lessen the effects and help re-straighten the toes.

I would leave surgery until you have tried other methods. Surgery will keep you off your feet for some time, but chat to your doctor about this.

Cheers, Midori

Ah thanks for your reply. Yes I am trying various methods of help. I sleep with a wedge between my toes, and try to put something on to help when out walking, but I can never really forget it. Feels a bit tender. Hopefully it won't grow anymore and it will go into a stagnant stage. It's so annoying though, and I'm a crazily active person 🙈

I agree; I too was a very active person, not just dance but I've done rock climbing, Horse riding, hillwalking and other things. I used to be incredibly fit, but now, I'm unfortunately old. Spirits still willing, but body won't respond any more, unfortunately!

Cheers, Midori!

I had mine surgically removed and wish I had done it much sooner.

Hi - thanks for your sentence. My father had his operated on about 50 years ago and he died 20 years ago. Other than that I have only met one person who has had the op and she is very happy about it. I've been wearing spacers night and day for a few years. My twin sister has not and her foot is very misshapen. My guess is the longer it isn't corrected or somewhat contained the worse it gets. Any chance of getting the op on the NHS or does it have to be private. Any idea about the cost? Thank you!
