I’ve only ever had two Dexa scans in six years. . My last one was three or four years ago. I’m wondering if we should have more scans. I just read a post where someone’s meds stopped working for them. I couldn’t cope with any more fractures. It’s already ruined my life. I find it difficult doing things now. It is concerning especially because my bones were really bad to start with. My bones were -5.5 to start with. My last Dexa said -4.6 or -4.3.
Im wondering how anyone else feels about this.
SHOULD WE HAVE MORE SCANS TAKEN?

I was told scans aren't done more often than every 2 or 3 years because it takes at least that long to see any changes resulting from medication. Speak to your bone specialist to make sure they are doing everything they can to help your bones.
To be honest I’m not sure more scans or more frequent scans will help anything. As I see it osteoporosis is what it is, you can do everything to can to help your bones - drugs, weight bearing exercise, eating all the right foods and vitamins to help your bones.
However it looks as if that all seems to work better for some people than for others. I don’t know what the answer is and I’m not medically qualified but I tend to think that avoiding stress and anxiety is probably a good thing.
I suppose more independent scientific research into why some people are worse than others would be helpful but other than that I don’t know. For myself regular DEXAs that possibly show things aren’t working and my condition is worsening would only depress me.
I live in the USA and get annual DEXA scans because most of the medications I’ve been on have been for a limited time, I.e, 1 yr, 2 yrs and both myself and my doctor want to measure the treatment performance
I was told I wouldn't get my next Dexa scan for 5 years but I asked my specialist if I could have one in 3 years as my bones had got worse when I'd had a 5yr gap before. I think it's more to do with the cost to the NHS why we don't get them more often, as my friend in America has a scan every year.
