What are the best supplements for osteopenia

Truth-seeker1951 profile image

Hi all, I am a new member and happy that I found this forum. I just had a follow-up Dexa Scan which showed that I have osteopenia but it there's improvement since last one in 2020. I don't know or understand my scores but will find out. I've been told by my Primary Dr that I have "high risk for fractures" and to start taking Fosomax, to which I said no after reading about side effects. Please advise what daily supplements you take for osteopenia. Many thanks!

I don’t know about osteopenia but I’ve got osteoporosis and I take vitamin D3 1000-3000 ug - more than I got from my doctor - depending on what my levels are (I test regularly) K2-Mk7, magnesium (both orally and I like to put some magnesium flakes in my bath) I take an algae based omega 3 DHA capsule, boron and although I get most of my calcium from calcium rich foods I top up with an algae based calcium capsule (the calcium carbonate that I got from the hospital really upset my gut) the full dose is one capsule three times a day and I only take one so it really is just a top up.

I eat a lot of calcium and vitamin D containing foods - a good list is on the ROS website theros.org.uk. I avoid things like junk / fast food, sugar and fizzy drinks and I eat a lot of fish, eggs, chicken, green leafy veg plus raw nuts and seeds etc.

hope that’s some help, I’m sure others will give you more ideas.

Osteopenia doesn't suggest a high fracture risk! It isn't even a disease, it's just a way of saying that you have reduced bone density, which we all get as we age! Do you have other risk factors that would raise your fracture risk, for example have you already had a fragility fracture?

Interesting. I have no other conditions. Thank you!!

If you look at your report it should list the projected percentage of possible fracture.

To improve bone mass naturally you need to do two things. Get up on your feet and walk and second, join a gym or do an DIY resistance training.

You do not need to do supper heavy weights or you can buy some resistance bands and they will provide the same effect. Look on You Tube there are many video that show you how to use both weights and bands for resistance training. Cheaper than doing the gym route.

Walking is FREE. I do 12 to 15000 steps a day. Buy a FitBit or Apple Watch and install the app Pedometer ++ on the watch.

Join a Silver Sneakers program in your area.

The opportunities are unlimited you just need to make it happen. Like Nike says JUST DO IT.

Yes!! I'm out walking now 2 miles a day. Being retired the YMCA is across the street and has eGym free, which I will get back to doing! Thank you for the encouragement and support!!!

Minerals: boron, magnesium, orthosilicic acid (silica), selenium, zinc/copper,

Quercetin, CoQ10, NAC, Milk Basic Protein (MBP).

For calcium I rely on a healthy diet. One can of salmon a day gives me about 500mg + omega 3s. I also have a scoop of whey isolate and two scoops (20g) of hydrolyzed collagen a day for amino acids.

Having had DEXA scans for the last 14 years and been told I had osteoporosis all that time, I have found out I only have osteopaenia! Fortunately I didn't take any of the infusions etc that were offered. My decision, as I don't like putting too many alien chemicals into my body. Plus the side affects really frighten me. I take calcium, K2 Mk 7, Vit D 3, other minerals including magnesium. Am in the UK so after seeing posts on here I went and saw Nick Birch of Osteoscan UK last Monday. That's when I found out I do not have Osteoporosis! He uses a different more accurate machine REMS. Maybe have a look if you are in the UK. I have exercises to do to strengthen my bones. DEXA scans do not give you a fragility score but REMS does. Hope that helps.

Thanks so much!! I called and asked for the Dexa Scan results for the past 3 year so I can understand my scores. It was great, with results and color graphs showing green normal T scores, yellow Osteopenia and red Osteoporosis. My scores were just into the top of the yellow. I highly recommend getting your last 3 years too. Then I called the pharmacist, told him my story, gave him the input for non chemical solutions from our group. He agreed. Because of my scores and the high cost of vitamins, not covered by health care, he recommended D3-1000mg and calcium to start. The other components are in the food eatten if on a healthy diet. He said if my next scan gets worse then make a new plan. I asked about the Fosomax side effects. He said it is imperative to sit up straight for 1 hour after taking it. He said that the radical side effects shouldn't happen. I asked about the loss of teeth after a fewcyears and he said it's rare but does occur. He also commented on how long the Fosomax stays in the system. He said it is usually prescribed for weekly doses because it takes that long to be shed from the body, and that it doesn't stay forever. I am so gratefulfor allbthis grouos information!! Pattie.
