I think prunes help to build bones and stop fractures...but im not sure about it all.Apparently 6-12 prunes per day is the right amount to take.

Research it yourself so you can learn more about it.

prunes contain boron and there is some evidence that boron is important in building bones. You get it in many foods...prunes are a good source. 6-12 prunes would have another effect on me!! but I do take 4 a day...you do get it in other foods.

What a lovely helpful reply! Please, could you tell us more about foods containing boron, any vegan foods? Your name is great too, made me laugh!

you only need a few milligrams a day...easily got from plants...really useful list ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/B... (scroll down)

Thanks for comment on my name...I would have hoped that many of the issues would have been resolved by now, but they are not...and now I have ageist attitudes to fight...and I really don't have the energy!

Thanks again, that list is so interesting, and now I have an excuse for drinking coffee, not to mention wine, beer and cider!

As has already been said prunes contain boron and we need 3-6mg a day to help bones, along with magnesium vitamin d, calcium and vitamin k. You can get most vitamins from our food it's just knowing help much. The Internet is an amazing source of information. Apples also contain boron but sometimes it's just easier to take a supplement. Have you had hyperparathyroidism ruled out as a cause of your osteoporosis? It is a known cause which gets ignored.....

Thanks for the question, which has provided such useful responses. I have recently been rated as having osteoporosis of the femoral neck (-2.5). I have learnt so much in the last couple of months, much of that from these Bone Health posts. This is potentially very valuable as I am just coming to the decision that I should try to avoid the bisophosonate that the GP is prescribing for me. The balance of risk seems to indicate that the cure could well outweigh the medication induced risks.

This is the first I have written since I attached myself to the group, largely because my time is spent following up on the experience and recommendations of all the splendid people who take the trouble to contribute.

I will report on my experiences as soon as I have something valid to say.

Meanwhile I'll try the prunes.

Hi @VenetiaBvD and Comedance prunes do contain boron but are also high in carbs and sugar - too high for me to take the advised 10-12 a day so I regularly just have 3 chopped into my live, plain yoghurt and take a daily 3mg boron supplement. Prune juice seems to be more concentrated in boron but then drinking juices means no fibre, something else we should be having plenty of. Below is a list of boron sources (you may need to click onto page 2). Coffee is listed at #8 but that is “full fat” coffee and caffeine is something we should be avoiding for our bones’ sake. I don’t know if decaf has the same amount of boron, not found anything about it yet but then I’ve not really looked. The second link shows more foods containing boron. The other thing is that for foods to be rich in boron the soil they are grown in need to have plenty of it and with the goodness in soils being depleted is that a given these days?

Just one caveat about diet and prunes - I have arrhythmias and prunes are high in tyramine, as are many foods such as fermented foods such as saurkraut, cheese etc.

Too much tyramine in the diet can trigger arrhythmias. Doesn’t seem to be a trigger for me but be aware and balance your diet. 4 prunes a day is my max.

Balancing things when you have multiple conditions is really important.
