Hello just a quick question does anyone out there know if there is any medication that can help bones get stronger but doesn't have the side effects of alendronic acid, which really put me off taking it.

thanks.

There are a variety of other medications available, but each one potentially has side effects. Which particular side effects are you concerned about?

Ithink its the fact that its supposed to build and strengthen bones but there seems to be many cases where taking these tablets actually causes the thigh bone and the jaw to break or start giving you pain which from what i have read is because the alendronic acid stops the body breaking down old bone, just builds rather brittle bone on top of already weak bones so to me it does not seem to be a great remedy.

In that case you would want to avoid all the bisphosphonates and denosumab. Strontium ranelate builds new bone, but isn't suitable for anyone with existing heart problems and can also raise blood pressure. Romosozumab helps build new bone but has to be followed by a bisphosphonate! There's another that builds bone, but again has to be followed by a bisphosphonate, so the options are limited! If you're able and it's safe for you, high impact exercise, weight and resistance training can be effective at building bone, combined with a healthy diet and supplements.

Thanks for the info.

Depending on the actual condition of your bones, appropriate exercise and a couple of important nutrients are the safest way to increase bone strength. Not for everyone, but certainly for far more people than doctors think is possible. Why have you been prescribed AA?

Yep and to be honest the more i read about it the more i get put off taking it.

This is an account I wrote some time ago. You might get some ideas from it.

Osteoporosis in my spine and hips,i think for now i might stick to exercise and nutrients and see how that goes, but i suppose if the pain gets bad enough i could try AA but not too keen.

unluckyalf, boron, magnesium, vitamin C & D, annatto tocotrienol and calcium will not only build strong bones but they bring to the table benefits medications cannot. Familiarize yourself with each because together they represent a team, you want to know your players. Always consult your health care professional before using any supplement.

Thanks for that.

Hi! If your bones score isn’t too bad you wouldn’t be offered anything like that. It would probably be calcichew. If your bone score is low they may want to first give you Alendronic acid. I took one and was sick. My Husband took them for a few years and was fine. Not everyone reacts the same way as with all medication. I did at least try them. All the other medications are through injection. If it’s Terraparatide as I had you have to learn how to inject yourself and do it every day for two years. It thought I couldn’t do it but needs must and it didn’t bother me at all after a while. I hope that helps.

Thanks for the info,i suppose i could try them for a few months and see how it goes but there seem to be a lot of people on here who wouldnt touch AA with a barge pole.

Yes but they say the same about Denosumab. I’ve had them for about two years now. My Cousin has been on them for about five years. We have both been ok. Like I say all medications have some sort of thing you could get. I had no choice as it all happened quickly and I didn’t know anything about Osteoporosis. So sometimes it’s best to do what your Consultant says. You can always voice your opinion if you are unsure or you can just go for it and hope you’re not the one person in hundreds who will be affected.

Have you tried HRT? Note, I did not do HRT (am now considering it) but have seen a couple of posts were ppl have seen BMD improvements using HRT.
