I thought about Algaecal when I was first diagnosed. The nurse I spoke to on the ROS helpline wasn’t too impressed with it and because if the cost and the fact I might have to pay even more to import it into the U.K. I didn’t bother. I tried a couple of different types of calcium via my own doctor- both upset my gu and made me feel awful so I increased my dietary intake and at the moment I’m tipping up with 300mcg calcium citrate and that seems ok.I found this link to Algaecal on Margaret Martin’s website. It might be a help for you.

It's cheaper to buy the constituent parts of Algaecal in separate supplements, which you can then tailor to your own specific needs. Assuming you're in the UK, you can't buy Algaecal here, although I believe there is an equivalent. It's the Strontium Boost (strontium citrate) part of Algaecal that guarantees increased bone density, but this is achieved because strontium gets absorbed into the bones and is denser than calcium. There is some evidence that strontium also attracts extra calcium to the bones and increases bone strength, not just density. You can buy a strontium citrate supplement separately and much more cheaply, but it should probably be avoided if you have existing heart or kidney problems, including high blood pressure. Two daily servings of Algaecal Plus, which is the other part of Algaecal, contain a small amount of Vitamin C, a basic amount of Vitamin D (which isn't enough for many of us, though could be too much for some), Vit K2-MK7, calcium, magnesium and boron. Calcium is far better obtained from diet if possible, and some people don't tolerate magnesium in this form.

I agree, "Calcium is far better obtained from diet." - so long as it is having some effect.

I tried AlgaeCal and I am still taking my original bottle. I am about to have a bone density scan and will reply with the results. However, I have to report that I bought the initial set of the AlgaeCal with the "Strontium Boost" and would like to tell you to monitor your heart rate carefully when you take the Strontium because it caused me to have Brachycardia (slow, irregular heart beat) immediately after taking it! I stopped the Strontium immediately, sent it back and asked for a refund for that product. I therefore consider taking Strontium dangerous, I wrote to them reporting my symptoms - don't know if they took any notice.I am hoping that the calcium content is doing some good although I am nervous of taking calcium in case there is precipitation in my arteries, although I do take vitamins D and K along with it. We will see, when I have finished the bottle I will have my bone scan, if there is a positive change I will keep it up and if there is no change I will go back to milk, D and K. Watch this space.

Hi Val-55, I came across this when I was looking into Algaecal. What I found interesting, if I'm reading Table 1 and Figure 2 correctly, is that the greatest gains were made from Plan 3, the formula that had no strontium citrate in it at all.

I saw how expensive the Algaecal was, so looked for an alternative and came across this. The formula for their calcium is very close to Plan 2 in the above study.
