Does anyone find that changing shoes makes their back worse? With 5 compression fractures I’ve had horrible pain and muscle spasm which is only slowly getting a bit better. I’ve been wearing my walking boots nearly all the time but they’re old and not always suitable for the weather - even here up North! Problem is that any other footwear seems to make my back pain worse - I’ve tried trainers and walking shoes but the next day I’m always really sore and have worse muscle spasm. The only other footwear which I’ve been mostly ok with is a pair of walking sandals but they’re not always suitable up North either 😂 I should be replacing my boots but they’re really comfy and of course there’s no trying anything on at the moment.

I have a neurological condition and also osteopenia.

I see a podiatrist regularly for my balance condition and am prescribed orthotics.

At my first consultation I was told to always wear lace ups, preferably boots - leather not canvas. I was also told that trainers/running shoes are good because they give support. When I go for check ups, I am told off if my shoes are looking a bit old.

I buy my shoes online - free delivery - free returns. VAT exempt because I am disabled.

(It sounds as though you have found out what you should be doing)

Thank you - think I’ll have to try the online thing with free returns - though it’s getting a bit too busy in the post office now for my liking!

I suffer with hypermobility syndrome and I’ve found often that footwear has a huge impact!! Walking into town with sandals on was a huge struggle and sometimes couldn’t make it!! When I was diagnosed the dr referenced ASICS gel kayano, £160 in shop I brought mine off eBay for half of that and they are the best pair of shoes I’ve ever owned!! I wear them all the time, I can’t be without them they are so supportive and has made a huge difference!! X

Yes, i find any shoes that are too flat puts a strain on my spine. I can’t wear my nice flat pumps anymore, I have to stick to trainer type shoes and walking boots.

Whenever I change shoes my muscles react! I’m trying to go barefoot in grass (grounding) for and hour each sunny day now that the temps are pleasant in S.E. CT!

I tend to go barefoot in the house because slippers are hopeless!

Hello Nuthatch

Have a look online about Sorbothane - I started to use Sorbothane insoles; when I first started to walk outside after spinal fractures etc. the different surfaces caused me the same sort of problems you wrote about when wearing different shoes. Shoes are so important yes, but the Sorbothane insoles helped me as much as correct shoes/boots.

Sometimes when I find a pair of boots or whatever I wish I’d bought more than one pair! Worth seeing if you can find same again.

Sadly they are Brashers which was taken over by Berghaus and they don’t make them any more. And Berghaus don’t have a great reputation now. I’ve ordered some Lowa boots at great expense (for me anyway!) so fingers crossed.

So frustrating. I found my last pair in a tiny outdoor shop in Scotland and limited selection of three! Usually I’m going from shop to shop! First pair fit perfectly and hardly took them off after. Maybe I should buy another pair. There are some wonderful Clark’s shoes which used to have rubber soles which after years have hardly worn but now they are synthetic and do. Know lots of people who have them and still comfortable even though relegated to gardening shoes. Hope the Lowe fit!

Wonder if it’s worth contacting Berghaus. Never know there may be some Brashers your size in some dusty cupboard?

I’ve got the Lowas and they seem good but just wearing them indoors for now in case they don’t work out and I need to send them back! I like the funky colour - described as “espresso and berry” 😂

Good plan. Hmm Espressy and Berry? Sort of dark browny purple?
