I have Ankylosing spondylitis. My Rheumatologist sent me for a DXA 2016. Result; spine T-3.1 femur T-2.7
I tried the non medication route for 14months. Just exercise, adcal, vitK2,boron, magnesium and prunes. I attend yoga,Pilates, and tai chi classes 5 times a week and walk 5K to class. I spend 15min after class using weights in the gym. DXA 2018 shows 0.2% reductive spine, 0.3% improvement femur. In light of the spine result. I’m now taking AA weekly without any side effects. This is my third month and strictly follow protocol for taking.
I hope this helps anyone like me who was nervous about taking AA.

From your posting it sounds like you worked hard when taking the non medication route. Well done you. It is good to hear that you are doing OK on AA with no side effects. I wish you well. Thank you for letting us know. Do let us know how you go on.
I was interested to hear you were sent for a DEXA scan - was that purely precautionary because of your AS, or were there other reasons for concern about bone thinning? My husband has AS (diagnosed 30-40 years ago) and we hadn't realised that he could still get osteoporosis as he was told that AS results in additional calcium deposits on the bones. He's never been offered a DEXA scan.
