Did it make your bones ache in the beginning ?

Osteoporosis. It improves bone density by preventing osteoclasts from doing their work of taking away old bone - which is why it, and other bisphosphonates, can only be taken for a few years, latest recommendations seem to be for two years. After two years the benefit from the med starts to be overtaken by side effects, some of which can be very serious. As it stays in the bones indefinitely there is really no harm in a "drug holiday" anyway.
