I have taken both AA and Risendronate. They are both bisphosphonates. Doctors always prescribe AA in the first instance and if that does not agree with the patient, opt for the Risendronate. I found no difference between them and was on these medications for about 4 weeks in all. They both gave me stomach and bowel problems. I never wanted to be prescribed a bisphosphonate because of what I had read and heard about them and from personal experience of my mother unfortunately being on AA for far too many years..
I chose to take SR (strontium ranelate) and so far have had no side effects that I am aware of.
I have a feeling that if you have a hiatus hernia then you may be considered for the once a year intravenous bisphosphonate instead if you are happy to go down this route.
I've. Even prescribe AA as well as Vit D as DEXA showed osteoporosis in right him and spine, thought they only exrayed the hip area and have Osteopania as well.. I have read up about it am too scared. To take it..so just taking the D..my Mum had dowagers hump tho lived to 96 in reasonable health except for digestion probs..I have been taking Omaprazole for, years for this, originally also diagnosed with Hiatus hernia..tho last endoscopy didn't show this..can this type of hernia, heal itself...still get reflux, etc. But,trying to cut back on Omaprazole
As hospital said this affects the bone...I am drinking Kefir now, a probiotic drink which she said might help..so much medication seems to interact badly with each other .specially the acid consideration as I take Levothyroxine and Simvastatin as well ☹️
If you are asking me Heron, I did buy SC but when prescribed SR I stopped. I do not pay for prescriptions and as I remember the SC was quite expensive. Although I believe I was buying the SC from a reputable company via the internet, one can never be 100% sure and as my doctor was unaware I was taking it that did not sit too well with me either. I do buy K2, magnesium, boron via the internet and that does not worry me like buying SC.
I too have recently been prescribed risondronate because of reflux from AA. A study just published showed adverse long term effects of biphosphonates on bones. I showed this to my GP and she still prescribed it, saying its all they have! I'm still not sure whether to take it.
How long have you been taking AA and now been prescribed risondronate? I believe one should take a "drug holiday" from this after being medicated for three years.....
I had been taking AA for 2 years off and on (because of reflux issues), but mainly on. I had a dexascan at the end of last year which showed osteoporosis in the spine and ostopenia in the hips. The consultant thinks risondronate might be tolerated better. He also mentioned SR, but my GP thought that hadn't been used for years, and queried its use for bone strengthening. Have you had an improved dexascan as a result of SR?
I have not had a dexa since starting on SR. It is prescribed but I heard somewhere and may be wrong that an endo/rheumatologist has to initially prescribe SR and then the GP can continue to issue repeat scripts. I had to wear a BP monitor for 24 hours to check BP was ok before I was prescribed this drug. I had to ask for SR and mentioned that it really was the only OP medication that I wished to take. I have a lot of joint pain anyway and I was not prepared to take a risk with any of the drugs on offer where this was a possible side effect. The consultant understood my concerns. All medication has risks. Some we know about at the time, others we find out later by research or personal experience..... We have to weigh up the pros and cons.
I to have been prescribed AA and have only taken it once as I am scared by all the comments . I already have to take Losarton, Simvastatin and co-beneldopa for Parkinson's so just don't know what to do as I don't tolerate strong medication very well.
Me neither so for now,I do leg and balance exercises given to my late husband and walk a lot as quickly as I can up and down hills to hopefully avoid falls..more concerned about my digestion
HI Londonium,, just been prescribed Evacal D3 1500 ms two a day, I read one should have Urine sample checks from time to time to ensure not too much calcium..
have not started Alendronic
Simvastatin ..been o. It for years, my cholestral was high, now bloodtests show normal range..I don't get any bad symptoms, unless it affects my arms..she said Vit D was borderline, but because I had broken my ankle 7 years ago, she should be prescribing D3.. just increased to 50 gem Levo I had to ask as I said I wanted to get better than normal range ..THS 3.67 abs T4. ..14.7
Hi. I too have an hiatus hernia and have been on both Alendronic Acid and Risendronate most recently which not only gave me horrendous reflux but really bad spasms/cramp across my abdomen (several times a day) just like AA. I decided to come off both as they are as bad as each other imho and am currently on AdCalD3 (several years now) with Vitamin K2 MK 4 to try and make sure the calcium goes into my bones and does not lay down plaque in my arteries. I could not bear to go back on AA or Risendronate because of the pain. I am on so many meds including pain "relief" ha ha, so deffo do not want more causing me harm.
This post is very interesting as started on AA and from start had tummy problems. They escalated but gp wasnt sure what was wrong with me, My oncologist arranged camera test last week and yes I have irritation that may be caused by Fosavance so I have two choices, a broken hip or an upset tummy. I could go on Prolia injections but need to have urine checked every six months so wondering what to do next. I am not going back on AA until I see if I can actually have Prolia and to discuss with Onc if Prolia would prevent me having drugs which I may need in future for Ovarian Cancer. Its a minefield isnt it
Hi Jenny have been on this drug for 2 years ,i have no problem with it at all. i like you read the reviews and they frightened me too.I had a word with my consultant about this who reassured me i could come straight off it if there were any problems. He said there was only one in so many that it effected.I have had no side effects at all i take it exactly on the same day every week at the same time with a large glass of water. So give it a try Jenny and see how you go.
