The amazing scbauer77 shared her father's story on The Podcast by KevinMD. The episode titled, "A story of liver cancer and diabetes" talks about how Sarah's father did what he was supposed to do (healthwise), but never knew he was at risk for liver cancer, specifically HCC.

I highly recommend you listen to the episode here: youtu.be/uWLRSeO_Axc?si=rEG...

The more we share our stories, the more we raise awareness. The more we raise awareness, the more lives we can save!

Thanks to Sarah for sharing! Diabetes as a risk factor for HCC is so minimized and unrecognized and so important to increase awareness for better surveillance of those at risk! Bonnie

The importance of this topic cannot be overstated. My husband had type 2 diabetes for over 20 years. While he could have been better at watching what he ate, he diligently went for checkups with all his doctors. He was overweight all his life so when he started to slim down he was thrilled, never thinking there was something nefarious going on in his body. Neither did his four doctors, three of them specialists and one of those specialists a hematologist/oncologist: his blood work was consistently fine and he was feeling pretty good. Also, one of the drugs he was taking for his diabetes could also cause weight loss. Finally the hematologist became concerned enough about his weight loss and sent him for a CT scan that showed a 10cm tumor in one lobe of his liver and smaller tumors in the other. The debacle continued with an initial biopsy that diagnosed the mass as benign. Another biopsy was scheduled, losing precious time to more scheduling conflicts and delays. He was diagnosed with HCC at the end of July 2023. Despite treatment with immunotherapy he died in December. I try not to torment myself with “if only” but I can’t help but feel at least one of those doctors should have been more aware, especially the endocrinologist and oncologist.

Dr. Bauer, having been touched personally with a similar tragedy, is in a position with her professional credentials and networking power to continue to bring this overlooked consequence of chronic diabetes to the forefront. I cannot thank her enough.
