I’m a mom and a grandmother. I love my life and my family. I’ve been going through hell for the last 12 days here’s why….I started getting a weird feeling in my chest around Christmas time. I felt my pulse and I felt my pulse pause in between a few beats here and there. I went to see my cardiologist he put me a heart monitor for 10 days then did an echo on my heart. When I went for my results he said I have a few leaky valves they’re mild nothing to worry about and that my heart was strong. I cut caffeine out of my diet the day I started feeling that strange feeling in my chest. I wasn’t feeling that irregular heartbeat anymore thank God! My cardiologist put me on Metoprolol 25mg. The day after I took the beta blocker I felt unbelievably sick, anxious, could no longer sleep at night at all and lost my appetite!?! I finally went to the hospital the day after and they said that I had anxiety put me on two different anxiety meds one Hydroxyzine that made me violently sick so I got off that right away and the other was Sertraline that I also took myself on after a week. The hospital didn’t have me checked out by a cardiologist they just summed it up to anxiety that I’ve never had before and put me on unnecessary meds without proper diagnosing me. I feel horrible I think it’s the Metoprolol that brought this on to the point I had to go to the hospital that day. I’m going to see my cardiologist today and try to get off this beta blocker and hope that I am ok without it and can actually sleep again and get my appetite back because living like this is horrible! I’m literally going on 12 days with hardly any sleep at all and I’m so overtired I can’t think straight, I’m irritable and all these damn doctors want to do is try me out on anxiety meds to see if that’s the problem??? I didn’t have anxiety I felt sick which of course can make anyone anxious…I’m seriously considering going to do a sleep study because enough is enough!!!!

Hi Mom, I have never used that medication. Drugs.com is a good site to find more information about a certain medication. I just read about metropolol and there is a lot of information. There is a warning not to just stop taking it so be aware. Also, if you scroll down to “More About Metropolol” and click on “Reviews”, there are a lot of people with some serious sounding side effects.

Everyone has different reactions to drugs but it surprises me that the Metoprolol would give you anxiety. Metoprolol is a beta blocker and one of its side uses is actually to help people with social phobia and performance anxiety. That being said, Metoprolol is a powerful drug and it took me a long time to get used to it. I am currently taking 100mg daily (down from 150mg daily - which I couldn't tolerate because of dizziness). I wonder if there is something in the drug itself that you are allergic to?

I was prescribed bisoprolol, a different beta blocker, for high BP. It gave me anxiety as well as many other serious side effects. I had to stop taking it after a month after a trip to a&e in excruciating pain. Beware getting off beta blockers can be a problem for some.
