Since starting taking amlodipine I have a big problem at night, needing to urinate every 1.5 to 2 hours. Does anyone else have this problem.

I used to go about twice a night , but with Amlodipine 5mg, I find I'm going about four times a night.

I generally get back to sleep fairly quickly.

Will be seeing doctor for review next week, so will see if any solutions.

I take 5mg of Amlodipine daily and have had increased frequency in needing to urinate at night. It will not appeal to all and I know some on this forum have an aversion to it but I have found Beetroot juice has improved my disturbed sleep pattern at night. Probably a one off but as I write this I have not needed to get up during my last nights sleep, some seven hours undisturbed. In the UK the brand I purchase is called ‘Beet it’ and is available in most mainstream supermarkets. In addition the health benefits are well documented. I take a small glass of juice just before bedtime. Not for everyone I know but hopefully it might benefit some.

Thanks--- I'll definitely try that.

Hope they have it in Aldi/ Lidl!🤔

I read somewhere that beetroot can lower blood pressure, I don't know how true that is, do you find the Amlodipine is working for you, and do you mind my asking how long you have been drinking the beetroot juice as well? I only started taking Amlodipine today.

Hi sugaredalmonds, the Amlodipine appears to be working which I take with Doxazosin which together keeps my blood pressure under control. I am due a review of my meds so will discuss further with my Doctor. In the beginning I was on a 10mg dose which caused my ankles to swell so I reverted to 5mg and this solved the problem. I have been drinking Beetroot juice for just over a year and it has worked for me (healthline.com/nutrition/be.... Best wishes and I hope Amlodipine works for you with no serious side effects.

Hi Bodoni, thanks for getting back to me & for the wishes. To be honest I have been (foolishly some might say) dragging my heels starting the Amlodipine, as I was, still am, nervous, I already take several other meds for AF, which I have been taking for many years.

I will give the beetroot juice ago.

Likewise. I have had this problem for the past 4 years, getting up every 2 to 3 hours at night, making it difficult for me to get back to sleep. Dr referred me to a Urologist, who gave me an MRI of the kidneys and a 12 hour Cortisol Urine test, but nothing was found, so still not resolved. My suspicions have always leaned towards this medication, so any help would be appreciated by others with this problem, as i feel the lack of sleep is causing me other recent health issues. I usually take the medication in the evening, but even taking in the mornings still hasn't helped to rectify this problem, or even skipping a day.

Same side effects of Amlodipine here: getting up 2/3 times a night to visit the bathroom but with no other signs of urinary system problems.

I must try drinking my beet juice at night instead of the morning to see if it helps me.

Keep well all,

Peter

I had the same problem, it was a nightmare, I asked to come off the drug which caused many problems, which all stopped within 2 days. For some it works, it's a very cheap drug, hence why it's used first, if you need medication keep trying until one works for you, take care.

I to am on Amlodipine and go to the toilet 2/3 times during the night. Never made the link with this tablet as just thought it was me. This has made me rethink!

Hi! Before Amlodipine I never had to get up. I'm on 10mg daily and have to get up once or twice a night so definitely the drug to my thinking. I'm sure I was worse to begin with so maybe it will settle.

I'm going to buck the trend here! I have been taking amlodipine for over two years and never need to use the bathroom during the night even though I have a large glass of water before bed.

I've been taking 5mg amlodipine for 6 months. No change for me. If I drink a cup (or two) of tea in the evening I usually have to go in the night. If I don't drink anything or water I sleep right through. That's the same as before I started taking amlodipine.

I suffer from overactive bladder but no change in nighttime trips to the loo. However I did suffer from acid reflux but lowering my dosage from 10 to 5mg has helped that.

I was recently in hospital with Covid Pneumonia. Just before my discharge after a month in I had a fall, which was attributed to low blood pressure and all my heart meds were withdrawn including Amlodipine, Ramipril and furosemide. Now three months later I have had only my Ramipril reinstated with a lower dose.

I am still getting up to go to the loo on average 3 times a night. So, in my case Amlodipine was not the cause of my nightly loo visits
