Hi, I was diagnosed with very high blood pressure today, 180/90. My GP put me straight on two meds. Some people are telling me that’s seems a bit odd and two quick to be put straight on these. My Gp wants to see me again on Friday. Does anyone have a similar experience? Thanks

I think, jewelgirl, that your GP probably followed NICE guidelines - but we don’t know your age nor medical history so it’s difficult to make an informed comment But you are seeing him:her soon so you can ask
Thank you Happyrosie. I’m 55 and very healthy, non smoker, not overweight. I have a family history of high blood pressure. Yes I’ll see what happens on Friday, thanks x
I'm the same, blurred vision came on suddenly in the week and a friend advised I had my blood pressure taken. The doctors receptionist told me to buy a machine! Luckily a doctor I know took if for me and the reading was 180/90. I was then referred to an emergency phone appointment with my doctor and he prescribed Amlodipine 5mg once per day and they will review in 4 - 6 weeks. Advised to buy a machine and take readings daily. Age 63, not overweight, like a glass of wine occasionally, non smoker - quite a shock. Waiting for an eye appointment on Wednesday.
I was put on ramipril and amlodipine initially followed by propranolol shortly after by a consultant after being admitted to hospital with a hypertensive crisis. Not ideal as it is better and safer to titrate dosage upwards gradually with one and then another if needed but needs must in my case. I felt rubbish for months as a result but I have adapted now.
Morning - my blood pressure was the same as yours. I hadn’t seen my GP but took mine at home as I felt as though it was high. I phoned him gave him some readings and he put me on 2.5mg Amlopodine. Unfortunately I had side effects and that’s where my journey began!! I found I am hypersensitive to these meds and after trying 4 different types I am now on 10mg Lisinopril which I seem to be tolerating. I have been on them for 10 days, I take them around 10pm as I’ve read taking them at this time can help with any dizziness you might get. I presume your GP has put you on a diuretic and either a ACE inhibitor, ARB or CCB.
I would definitely question why you are on 2 to begin with.
My GP has been so patient and supportive, as they should be, so don’t be afraid to question what you’re putting into your body!! Also use the internet to check for side effects.
Best wishes Kate
Thanks Kate, I am on a diuretic too, Indapamide, GP just gave me a months worth of this. My BP is almost normal most days now, I’m monitoring it at home so I’m pleased the meds seem to be working. Most side effects have gone too but I still get very tired easily. I’ll see how it goes with the 24hr monitor. Take care x
