I just started taking amlodopine about a week ago and my feet just started to swell the past few days . How long does it take to return to normal?

From my experience, the swelling didn’t resolve and I tried to persevere for 3 months. Bad decision because the swelling caused inflammation which, having stopped the Amlodipine, I now have to live with (red and blotchy lower legs and ankles). The swelling resolved within a week or two of discontinuing the drug. but obviously on reflection I should have discontinued it much sooner.

Oh geez I’m sorry. Did you switch to a different blood pressure med?

Yes, switched between a few for a while before finding myself eventually settled on a few different ones. Hopefully you may find your swelling side effect resolves in a few more days, but don’t worry if not as there are loads of alternatives available.

I take Amlodipine 5mg. I do have red and blotchy lower legs and ankles. At first I thought it was a suntan from wearing 3/4 length pants. Now I can attribute it to Amlodipine. I didn't get any swelling. Am I hearing that the red and blotchy will not disappear even if I stop Amlodipine?

If you didn’t have any swelling leading to the red blotchiness, perhaps there is a reason other than Amlodipine in your case. Checking with your Dr may reveal the answer.

Yes. I also take Propafenone, so it might be this medicine

Hi Orcawa. It may settle down yet as it's early days but if not, you could ask for a different brand of Amlodipine. I was fine on them for several months and was taking the Sandoz brand but that was changed to the Accord brand and that's when my problems with swelling started. I had bad swelling of my heels, ankles, lower front legs and feet including the toes and a nasty rash on my lower front legs. I stopped taking the Amlodipine and the swelling starting to go down but the alternative med that they put me on made the swelling start again so I stopped them too and re-started the Amlodipine and this time, was given the Sandoz brand again and all the swelling went away - not instantly but within a few weeks it all completely went and so did the rash on the fronts of my legs. Give yours a little longer though and see if it settles. Good luck. xx

Took a few months on 10mg amlodipine before my ankles started to swell, put up with it for a week then phoned doctor and they changed me to indapimide 2.5mg which works in a different way but seems to suit me ok, been on it since may (as well as losartan 100mg which i have been on for a couple of years and various other heart meds) with seemingly no issues
