Dust from worn-out brake pads could have the same harmful impact as diesel emissions, according to scientists.
Tests carried out by King's College London, show metallic abrasion dust can cause inflammation of the lungs and reduce immunity, increasing the risk of respiratory infections.
Scientists said the metal particles could be contributing to serious illnesses like pneumonia or bronchitis.
As a schoolboy travelling daily on London Underground I can vouch for the train brake smell and catching in the throat as well as coughing. The fumes also seemed to invade the carriage you sat in. health and safety regulations did not apply then HH, perhaps not even now though it is many years since I have been in London. Rural Scotland has much to recommend in contrast, wide open spaces far from the claustrophobic tunnels of my childhood.
