Sunday 6th Nov was the annual run of the London to Brighton veteran cars. But this old crock conked out and the London bus splashed out. Two photos from this morning.

A wet Sunday in London
Reminds me of that great film ‘Genevieve’ and Larry Adler’s theme tune play by himself on the harmonica. 1953.

Hi Don, what a lovely film that was, full of yesteryear, honesty, old fashioned humour, light hearted and entertaining. Great actors too. Kenneth More was such a lovely man. As for Larry Adler, yes he composed that lilting tune. He was the tops in bluesy harmonica, really making it sing. He was full of stories and anecdotes. A real genius.
1953 ! I left school that year !
that was the time when you had to walk to the local cinema and pay for a seat, if you were unlucky it was full and you had to go back home an try again another day .
I was two years old when that film came out. Must admit I don’t recognise it BUT I’m a big fan of earlier 1940s movies. Sunday afternoons in the sixties there was always an old film on and I watched with my mother while doing my ink exercises for school the next day. My mum always jumped up to “put the dinner on” when the weepie bits came. She loved Robert Taylor but I was a Humphrey Bogart fan. Luckily she also liked cowboy films. I know most of the good ones and I think Red River is the perfect cowboy film. What do you think?
I feel for the poor old crock. 😊😊😊
It must have been absolutely awful for many of them in their open cars. I imagine many more might have conked out. It was throwing it down all day in Sussex. Husband went from our home in Eastbourne to the Ardingly autojumble and felt quite concerned about the rising water levels. He said it was almost a foot deep in one place and he was glad to get back home without incident.
Those old cars are pretty sturdy, but they lack the sophistication of modern motors and the steering is hard enough on a dry road, let alone going through floods.
We missed seeing the local news, so don't know how they all got on.

For as long as I can remember, the first Sunday in November was always crisp and dry. I used to cross Brixton Hill on a bicycle, dodging the veteran cars chugging past, on my way to play at the Sunday morning prison. Maybe only once in 50 years was it raining. I did see a few old crocks go by in Streatham yesterday, but nothing like the old days when the whole road was taken up by them., the driver and passengers wrapped in blankets and swigging the odd brandy from a hip flask. Those were the days when families would dress up in Victorian or Edwardian costumes, to cheer and wave from the pavements. I will ask my friend (who took the pictures) to gain a better idea of how many cars there were on the run.
Aaaw what a shame and it looks a right miserable day too. I feel for the people who were out in this. We have had rain in Manchester all day yesterday but nothing like on your photo, well not where I live x
not raining toay and the clouds are getting defined so we might even get some sun later today, just in time for it to set ! I hate these short days and it will get worse in next 6 weeks . 3 months time before it will be the same as today. How depressing.
as to the rain remember the reservoirs are still low and we need more rain to fill them
Such a shame but great photos.
lovely photos the red really pops out 🙂
Great photo.thanku x
Just received this posting, have noticed getting bit erratic. Thanks for such good and interesting photos, best regards, Jean
Well Jean, I'm glad you did see the two photos (taken by a friend). The weather was ghastly but i read there were near 350 vintage cars on the run, but truly i cant believe that number, such was the bad weather. How is the jag?
Jag in garage for winter, finally managed to get new seat belt fitted. Surprising the drive to Brighton is so late in year, don’t take Jag out in bad winter weather. Jean
