My Salamol Ignorance

Hi can anyone please tell me how we know when a Salamol inhaler has finished and how you safely dispose of the used ones?

Shake and spray is what I do and take back to pharmacy

If you take the inside out of the

Case, put it in a dish of water. If it sinks it's full. If it floats it's empty or very nearly.

I thought you were never supposed to put them in water. I do a practice spray into the air.

I know I’ve asked this before, as have many others, but why does Ventolin not have a counter on? Of all the inhalers to not have one, this seems nuts, especially as it’s something that we maybe use a lot at one time then not at all for a while. We have to guess how much is left, if any. Most inhalers have a counter on now, and those are ones we use the same amount every day. Why not put a counter on Ventolin 🤔

I keep saying the same thing! I keep one Ventolin by my bed, one in my handbag and one by the kettle. I have no idea how much is in any one of them so probably change them before I need to. It's daft, isn't it? xx Moy

I do the same, I have one close at hand in the bedroom, lounge and kitchen..I know I change them before they run out, I would sooner do this than actually run out when I needed to use it....

As your G P for a emergency one to keep you must not run out of it

I take it out of the holder and shake it you can feel if it's less but just to be sure I just change mine each month when I get my new ones of the go because if your not getting the correct dose your going to pay the price. As others have mentioned they should all have a counter on them. I've run out of them and it's not funny

You should be using a spacer, you can see the spray go into a spacer. Not ideal when you are out somewhere. For me, I could also taste Ventolin. I now use Bricanyl (which does have a counter) as Ventolin no longer works for me.

Hold it to your ear and shake it to see if you can hear it sloshing around. Not easy. Take empties to your pharmacy to dispose.

I can't understand why no one mentions that all aerosols contain propellants. Grrr.

If when shaken you can feel/hear a small amount then it's probably just the propllent left.

I write the date opened and started on small granddaughter's inhalers so her parents can work out when to re-order new ones

The use by date is always on the actual spray container.

English pharmacies will recycle inhalers - perhaps ask your pharmacist for advice?

Hi, simply shake it for any sound of liquid inside the container. Take it to a chemist and ask them to dispose of it responsibly.
