Hi ,its Alice here 4 30 hours in morning carnt sleep owing to the amount of prednisalone I have been taking over the past month ,I am coming down from them now ,last day of four aday out of six ,start three a day tomorrow ,carnt wait to get of them ,I am still feeling pretty rough ,as I have been for a month now ,this is because I carnt seem to get rid myself of this Heamophillus influenzae bacteria ,which has invaded my chest many times over the pass few years ,usually it goes with two weeks of doxycycline but not this time ,my sputum test always says treat with doxycycline or amoxicillin, amoxicillin has not worked on me for some years so gp always gives me doxycycline ,the thing is I think doxycycline has stopped working on it ,even though sputum test says to treat it with doxycycline, I took it for two weeks ,I new it hadnt gone so gp gave me another week of doxycycline, I still new it hadnt gone ,sent another sputum test in ,results this week says I've still got it ,which I new I had because I could smell it when I cough ,also chest hurting ,more breathless ,and not feeling good ,been given another week of doxycycline yesterday ,I said to gp that they are not working ,his answer was he is treating me with what sputum test results says ,if they dont work this week I dont no were to go from here ,I suppose I am being a little impatient, this is because I've been treated with prednisolone ,and antibiotics for a month now ,and getting no where ,I am wondering if anyone else suffers with this haemaphillus influenza bacteria on here ,I am sure many do ,if so I would like to here from anyone that does ,and how do they treat it ,I am so grateful to the people on this sight for there thoughts ,and advice in the past month

Good morning I had the same infection the respiratory team at hospital prescribed Ciprofloxacin for two weeks this cleared it . Maybe you could speak to your team at the hospital or Gp. Hope things improve soon x

Hi Alice, I would say it was time for a different antibiotic. As soul-123 says, ciprofloxacin could be the answer.

Hoping things improve very soon. Xxxxx

Thank you sassy ,I've I said to soul I'll just wait and see if it goes with this last lot of doxycycline, I carnt see it though

Hi Alice,

Doxy can lose it’s effectivenes against haemophyllus. Cipro is very effective against it although it is usually kept back to treat pseudomonas for which it is the only effective go to antibiotic.

It sounds as though your GP is struggling to treat you. What condition do you have? Do you have a specialist consultant? I think that the time gas come for a re think and consultant advice.

Hi Alice, you must be really fed up at the moment, being poorly with this for a month is no joke and gp's cant seem to think for themselves sometimes, if its not working then its not working, time for a different ab. I do hope you get better soon x

Hi Alice Sorry to hear how unwell you have been your bug has dragged on quite a bit. I agree with the advice of Soul and Sassy had a problem with doxycycline not clearing up my bug and ciprofloxacin does the trick. Maybe your gp can refer you to the hospital consultant or if you are already with one ring the hospital and ask to speak to your consultants secretary.

Hope you get on ok. X

Hi Alice

I was in a complete mess getting infections every 7 weeks with h ( can’t spell it!) influenza. The respiratory consultant I saw kept on saying taking amoxicillin 1000 for 2 weeks. Eventually I changed consultants and was told amoxicillin is no good for this bacteria ( even though the sputum results sheet from GP state it is) and he prescribed levafloxicin. What a difference it made!!!! Coughed up all sorts of dark brown plugs which must have been there for so long! My GP hadn’t even heard of the antibiotic!!!

You have also my complete sympathy with prednisone! I can’t sleep at all on it and feel constantly hyped up in a horrid way.

Good luck we levafloxicine if you can get it prescribed as feel sure it help! X

I'm the same on prednisalone ,on a horrible high ,no sleep ,wont to eat loads ,talking to much lol ect ect ,I will mention levafloxicine to gp ,the trouble is I saw my consultant eight weeks ago ,next appointment will be in six months thank you winter

Yes it’s horrid on prednisone as I have the exact same symptoms.

Again good luck with GP as I fear you may have to push for levafloxcine. I would say it’s a stronger antibiotic but in desperation I saw a top Bronchiectasis consultant in London on the advice of the asthma society who i phoned in a desperate state. They suggested I did so ... know it’s not asthma but I had other complications. Anyone can ask to be seen anywhere on the NHS but of course you have to travel. I was fortunate to be able to pay to see him privately quickly and it was such a relief. Not only had my CT scans been read incorrectly but he said I needed levafloxcine ( sorry wrong spelling?) as this is the best antibiotic for this bacteria. I somehow think your GP won’t know this though.

Good luck x

Hi Alice, My resident pet used to be HI, now although I get all the other bacteria pseudo seems to have taken a liking to my lungs. I am intolerant to many medictions and they tried nebulised colomycin and nebulised tobramycin. I gradually became intolerant to both but they can be extremely helpful to many who find them beneficial.

You don’t say what dosage of Doxy they have prescribed for you. I don’t understand your HI coming back as sensitive to Amoxilin. Whist this is a good broad spectrum antibiotic, it is not normally effective on gram nevative bacteria, of which HI is one. On the other hand co-amoxiclav can be effective.

I have recently completed a course of home Meropenem IVs and although microbiology came back as my strain of pseudo not being sensitive to this drug, we agreed it had done something as the sputum cleared up in colour and quantity. So sometimes the results in a petri dish sometimes don’t equate to the results in your lungs.

If this next course of Doxy doesn’t help, you might want to ‘discuss’ the need to either change abs or get in touch with your cons secretary.

Good luck

Cx

Hi sorry to hear you are having this awful time, I had the same as you for a long time and I was eventually told the Haemophilus influenzae had colonised. I was in and out of hospital for about 2 years, after one of my stays on IV antibotics my consultant said I had to alternate between doxycycline and Co-Amoxiclav. Finally I was put on Azithromycin which I take Mon. Wed and Fri I take these full time with no end date. I am now free of infection but still do get none bacterial exacerbations and my COPD is still slowly getting worse. But nothing as horrendous as the infections and continuous hospital stays. Hope this helps.

Hi I forgot to say in my reply I also have mild Bronchiectasis which I think was caused by the continuous infections. Mags 1947

Thanks mags for your reply ,I have mild bronchiecstasis to with some emphysema, I was also put on azithromycin this time last year 250mg three times a week ,I stupidly came of them in July to give myself a break as I had a little ringing in ears ,I was ok for about 10 weeks ,and then this haemaphillus hit agian ,I think I must be colonised with it as every infection I get is the same bacteria hib ,my gp is against taking azi and doxy at the same time ,I am waiting to rid myself of hib ,as I carnt wait to back on azi ,so true theses infections pull you down when they go on for weeks,I am also year 1947 lol

Yes I also have a ringing or buzzing in my ears but to be honest I had before the az but annoying and irritating as it is it is better than the infections hope you get back on them soon.

Did your gp tell you to take it easy with no excersise during these times. I have mild bronch not long diagnosed and have had 8 infections since Feb this year when I was diagnosed with copd. Only last few weeks known ive bronch since ct scan know know the infection were dealing with but can't get rid of it. I feel my copd got worse too breathing bad. Been told to do light excersise but what is light excersise. I'm exhausted recently. Any advice would be really good Maz
