Prednisone..

Aurorastar_ profile image

Have any of you been given this medication for help of lung inflammation/ breathing issues, that can tell me how long it usually takes for breathing to improve? Mostly o2 levels? It's only been 2 days and I'm not feeling as weak, but up and moving I'm still dropping in the 80's.. I'm on this medicine for 8 weeks for treatment of hypersensitivity Pneumomtis.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks,

-Amy šŸŒ·

Hello Amy

In my experience prednisalone for asthma and other breathing issues works relatively quickly to reduce symptoms. My average dose is 6 x 5mg i.e. 30mg per day taken in one go. `this of course may differ for you depending on your symptoms.

Prednisalone I have found gives you a boost of energy and you feel like you want to do silly things like clean windows and move furniture around - because you begin to feel so well. Unfortunately this is a false wellness and you can do too much and become poorly again. My sleep patterns are also disturbed but Im not going to go into any detail because you may not have this type of reaction.

Just take care when on prednisalone - sudden highs can turn to sudden lows when you finish your course. I have just realised you are due to be on this drug for 8 weeks. In this case just make sure you follow your doctors instructions exactly and you'll be fine. Take care and look after yourself. Kim x

Thanks Kim. I have been started off on 60mg a day, for 2 weeks. And down from there.

Sleep is already an issue, as I knew it would be I had researched that.

Breathing isn't good yet. But as you said my doctors know best, and I'll stick to that. I guess I'm just getting giddy since I haven't breathed well in 11 months lol

Thank you for the email, I do have all these "things" I am thinking about wanting to do now. I didn't know if it was the medicine or just that "energy" it gives you briefly. But I haven't done any of it yet lol I know I need to stay slowed down a bit longer!

Be well,

-Amy šŸŒ·

I have never found this drug to help at all

I normally take 5 days @ 6 X 5 mg needed once month . I enjoy the small energy jumps and I also have less sleep. However I do find a big drop when I stop taking them. On a hospital respiratory nurses advice I plan to consult my GP to have a reduced dosage over a longer time. I take gaviscon to help with stomach problems or acidophilus friendly bacteria tablets you can buy. I cleared it with my GP before taking them. Joyce

Hi Amy, at a rough guess, I'd say everyone on here has been on Prednisone/ Deltacortryl at some time or another. I think it's impossible to avoid them when you have breathing difficulties. The most I've ever been on is 40 mgs a day but some people take way higher doses. As Kimmy explained in her excellent answer, prednisone can give you a false sense of energy but that's sometimes welcome if you have no energy at all. Everyone reacts differently to them, some love the effect they have, others hate it but nearly everyone finds it difficult to sleep while on them.

If the 60 is a single dose, then taking them as early in the morning as possible ( as far away from night time as possible) is probably a good idea.

I hope they help you. If you do feel that you are suffering any side effects from them, discuss it with your medical team.

Amy, I forgot to ask if you are taking the white un-coated tablet or the smooth red ones ? The red ones, called Deltacortryl in this part of the world, have exactly the same amount of Cortisone as Prednisone but because of the coating, are far easier on the stomach. Maybe you should also be taking something like Omeprazole to protect your stomach.

I am taking the tiny white ones. I've never heard of the red ones. These taste horrible šŸ˜©

I've also never heard of Omeprazole? Is it something you can pick up over the counter? I will have to look into it. Thank you!

Omeprazole is a generic and you might know it by it's brand name, Nexium. It's a drug that helps with heartburn, reflux and other irritations to the lining of your stomach from antibiotics, steroids etc. mention it to your doctor.

The little white pills are Prednisone. Ask if they have the version that's coated and easier on the stomach.

Take care Amy and I hope you get stronger day by day.

Hi Amy.

I just started about two weeks ago. As Billiejean and Kimmy has said it definitely gives me an energy boost and I breathe easier than usual. I am sure the energy boost is good for some people and not so for others but for me personally I love it!!! I have been fatigued for so long it's nice to feel a little bit "normal". My dose is very, very minimum. So not really any side effects apart from a tiny tummy issue. I hope it helps you. If you want to chat about it please do message me. šŸ˜šŸ˜ƒ

Have a good day Amy.

I started on 30mg 2 days ago together with antibiotics for a chest infection. My breathing is better this morning and the pain in my back has gone.

Omeprazole is usually given by prescription to treat GERD or stomach upsets. You can buy Lozec over the counter, which is the same as Omeprazole. Prednisone is used for treatment of COPD exacerbations. There are a few things you have to watch out for, if you use it a long time. Main thing is osteoporosis. Your can take risedronate to counter act this.

I usually start on 50mg for a few days ( depending on how severe the infection is) then it is decreased gradually every two days. Your Doctor should explain all this to you. Once I came off them too suddenly and my emotions got the better of me.

The medication does help a great deal to control the inflammation. I always take directly after having my breakfast before 9 am. The earlier the better as the drug does cause insomnia ( well it certainly does for me ) so taking early in the morning is best other wise you tend to just watch the ceiling at night.

You should be feeling a little better within a few days. Just take it easy! Always ask your Doctor if you are concerned.

I was first given Prednisolone over 30 years ago for a different health problem, it helped me within a week and I felt on top of the world. I am now on 40mg per day as well as loads of other meds for my breathing and it is not having the same effect, whether it is because I have been taking these steroids for years that they are not working so well now I don't know, but I am really struggling at the moment, fighting for breath, coughing non stop, mucus I can't shift and this has been for weeks, the cough for over a year but in the past 3 months things have deteriorated. Just wish I could breathe without a struggle. Hope the Preds help you.

Hi Amy,

I started on Prednisilone last week. 30mg a day for 10 days, I have them as an emergency for when my COPD/Bronchiectasis/asthma flares up.

I've had these many times over the years for numerous chest infections. In fact I've had so many courses, I was told by a specialist diabetic nurse 3 years ago that the Prednisilone caused my diabetes. A locum GP I've seen since has disputed this, but having researched it does seem that steroids can cause diabetes so I tend ot believe the nurse more!

So be careful, Prednisilone is good for short term use in fighting a chest infection. Long term use though can cause other issues.

x

That's what I'm reading.. Hopefully this will cut my inflammation down, and I won't need it past the 8 weeks (at least for awhile)

Be well Sir

I'm mostly noticing sleep disturbance and a bit of an upset stomach. I think I'm going to look into (or ask the doc next week) about something that can help protect the tummy.:

Thank you!

Your letter was a bit confusing. Initially you said that you started prednisolone 2 days ago and then that you have been on it for few weeks. Initially the symptoms improve on high doses. Then as you try tailing off the response flattens till you come to the the dose of say 2 tablets a day for few months. It's a wonderful drug to reduce inflammation & reverse the process but some scarring may result . Keep seeing your pulmonologist

If you re-read my post, you will see I JUST started taking this madicine, (now 3 days ago) I will be on it for 8 weeks, so until end of October :)

Be well

Having been on these myself and am now on a reducing regime, I find taking them with sparkling water takes the horrible taste away. Others use orange juice. Take Care

One side affect is weight gain and/or having a 'moon' round face due to water retention. Years ago, I was on 80 mg a day for several weeks and gained 20 lbs.The amount affects each person differently. Some people can't even tolerate a small dosage. I have no side affects with the lower dosage. Long term usage, as stated by others, can cause other issues such as glaucoma, so I have my eyes checked regularly.

I have been on 40 mg a day for years with none of these side affects. Just 2 months ago was able to get down to 30 mg a day and for several weeks after, my arthritic stiffness was more noticed.

Hi Amy,

I have hypersensitivity pnumonitis and I was given prednisone, it took a week or so to work, but it did help me, for a while. I took it for over three years and then it seemed to stop working for me. I am currently coming off of it. Have you been offered oxygen.? Although it is a pain carrying oxygen with you everywhere you go, it helped me emensly and gave me my life back, at least I could go out without passing out. I wish you all the best.
