This explains it, He will be having the ileostomy operation because he has colitis.

Hi Mason

I am surprised that this hasn't been fully explained to him by his surgeon.

You could Google :

NHS choices illeostomy.

It's when the small intestine is brought through an opening in the abdomen for a bag to be fitted (stoma ).

Is he having the Surgery to relieve the Inflammation in his colon /large intestine caused by the cotitis? Is he having a reversal after the large colon has had some time to heal?

He needs to phone someone on Monday and talk through his concerns. What do you think he is most scared of?

Didn't the hospital give him a booklet explaining the operation?

Have you considered phoning the Crohn's and Colitis helpline?

The daughter of an older friend of mine had surgery similar to this. She has two sons. She had a stoma fitted and her reversal surgery was postponed. She eventually had the reversal last year and has made a good recovery. Since then she has adopted a baby girl.

Everyone is an individual though. You could suggest to your Nephew that he writes down all the questions he wants to ask, anything he doesn't understand that he would like explaining to him - fears, how long recovery will be, etc - encourage him to phone Monday and ask.

Mason assuming your nephew is an adult he will have to sign a consent form before surgery so he really needs to know what the operation and after care involves before doing that.
