svt episode

Hello,

I felt palpitations this evening and did an ecg on my Apple Watch. It came back showing svt which I’ve had in the past and already take Verapamil for a fast heart rate. I’ve not had it for a while though and I’m wondering whether I should be letting anyone know I had this episode. It was only short and went away by itself.. but I don’t know whether I should be telling the cardiologist or GP about it. It worries me a bit but also I tend to just get on with it these days. Would appreciate any input for anyone who’s had similar!

If you haven’t been officially diagnosed with SVT I would mention it to your doctor. In my experience, SVT episodes tend to increase with age so it would be good to know your options if you do have it.

Thank you for replying! I booked a dr appointment for something else and I’m going to mention it at the same time. At the moment it’s just down as tachycardia with unknown reason so I would like to have an actual diagnosis. Not sure how hard that is to get on the nhs though!

Good luck. Arrhythmias are notoriously difficult to diagnose especially if they only happen now and again. You could request a 24 or 48 ECG or a loop recorder which monitors over a longer period of time. Mine was eventually caught on an ECG when an episode started and didn’t stop so I ended up in A&E. You are wise to mention it to your GP. Wishing you well.

I would mention it at your Drs appointment I have been officially diagnosed with SVT and am on Verapamil I have occasional palpitations not enough to consider ablation but if things change I have direct access to cardiology bypassing the GP. I have had two echocardiograms too which have shown an otherwise healthy heart All helps with peace of mind to have been through tests and spoken to a cardiologist. Xx

Thank for you reply! My cardiologist follow up isnt for quite a few months but I spoke to a gp and showed them the watch ecg, who said it definitely was SVT I recorded and I’ve been referred for another holter monitor. I’ve had a couple of palpitations since then but only a couple of beats rather than starting and stopping over and over again. I’m not confident the holter will catch it as it’s so intermittent and I’m not aware of any triggers it just seems to happen at random!

It’s great that your GP took the Apple Watch ECG seriously and referred you for a holter. I know it’s frustrating when the symptoms are so on-and-off, but even just having it on record that you’re experiencing this can help down the line. Fingers crossed the monitor catches something useful, and good shout mentioning it during your appointment, better to have it noted than ignored.

The ecg doesn’t have much detail but the gp said it clearly shows my heart rate changing from 70bpm to 180bpm instantly, then pausing, then repeating that over. It also was missing p waves which is the difference between that and regular fast heart rates! I have it saved for future reference too.
