Changes since heart attack.

Hi, I had a heart attack in December 2023 as a 63 year old man. This resulted in 1 stent being fitted. I gave found since the heart attack my patience is very short and I feel a lot more stressed and have very little tolerance. I am not sure if this is medication related or is it just as a result of the heart attack. My confidence is low and I constantly think about the change that has happened to me and I live daily with the fear of another heart attack. I was a very controlled individual pre-heart attack, however, I now feel very uncontrolled post-heart attack. When I get stressed my BP rises more easily, would this be normal? Furthermore, I have notice a weight gain of 5kg although I am actively walking 2 miles per day could this be med related. Bisoprolol, Aspirin, Losartan, Ezetimibe, and Rosuvastatin. The positives are I completed my Cardiac Rehab successfully and was discharged by my cardiologist 2 weeks ago.

Brival, if I were to analyse the posts to this forum I’d say that a good 20% of the posts are on the same sort of lines as you have expressed. A heart attack is a big thing mentally to get over.

Your cardiac rehab will have had, I hope, a session covering the mental side so maybe go back to the notes given then?

As far as weight gain goes, though, that wouldn’t be a normal thing as far as posts on this forum is concerned, so does your diet need looking at again? And maybe walking two miles a day isnt enough?

We are not medics here nor pharmacists but I don’t see why medication would influence your weight.

I hope others will post here with their thoughts.

Looks like the shocker feeling has taken over! What you will have to do Sir, 1) Start being patient with yourself 2) Understand - This ain't going away.3) Your on the right package of meds. 4) You'll need to monitor yourself daily as things progress and keep an eye over things.5) You simply have to keep control not loose control - All the best.

Apart from the weight gain - I can totally relate to your post. I have no patience any more and am very angry.

I concur with BC4ever. Since my HA and stent I have less patience and notice myself getting angry at relatively trivial things.

Hi there, the psychological side of things is definitely the kicker as most will agree to. My 33 year old son had HA last October 3 stents and awaiting another, 9 different meds which is heartbreaking to see. Yes he is short on patience, disinterested in small talk and things in general although coping stoically with the regime. It's a kind of grief isn't it...grieving for the life before and coming to terms with the fact that life has changed for ever, the uncertainty and fear. Putting on brave faces whilst inside is turmoil. As for weight gain we think it is the Bisoprolol, despite radical diet changes and doing all the right things he has gained nearly 10kg , doctor has said not to worry about this at the moment and can be dealt with later. Easier said than done as it compounds worry when you feel you can't control things. Obviously the meds alter the metabolism making weight loss harder. Follow up and getting the facts an answers to questions can be an uphill struggle which is frustrating also. As everyone would agree on these forums we have to turn to loved ones for help believe me we are all affected as a family, finding joy in the little things and distraction from the constant swirl in the mind. This is HARD to deal with and can be a lonely path despite all the help out there. Please remember in the dark times there are many many of us going through the same turmoil . Best wishes to you and keep on fighting, things WILL get better!

Yes,this 'psychological' change has happened to me too and remember life is so much more stressful in recent times for a whole host of reasons. If like me, you feel you are more acutely aware that 'life really is short' and thus any waste of that precious time by anything and anyone is (in my case now post HA) is almost immediately annoying, so much so this hair trigger reaction has really fired up my nervous system and fired up my GI tract with near constant acid reflux. I'm hoping with some counselling and yes time my system will calm down and I can come to some sort of acceptance (that life is basically chaos and largely, mostly beyond our control) and my mind& body will cease being on permanent red alert, I hope the same for you too 🙏

In terms of weight gain, check no increased 'eating of one's feelings' isn't going on or at least be mindful of it,it can creep up on you.I drink less post HA but eat more chocolate and yes my weight has gone up too.,I feel it's unlikely to be meds but I guess the slowing of your heart rate (Bisop) could in theory reduce metabolism but that's a total punt. I think we all here end up (for awhile at least) being our own mini detectives!
