New pacemaker, new sport too much?

Hi everyone,

New pacemaker has given me a new lease on life and I've decided to take up the challenge of a new sport but thought I'd better check with the forum to see if it's a good idea and anyone else has already done it. The sport is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) so it's grappling/wresting mostly on the ground. Anyone had any experience taking this sport up with a pacemaker (fitted 3 x months ago).

Many thanks in advance, kind people,

Will

Blimey , I’d certainly check that out with my medical team. Not sure about the potential for the pacemaker to be knocked about. I see a few posts about the discomfort of the pacemaker , not that I have one Nstemi heart attack and quadruple bypass for me 🤦🏼, sticking to farm work, running & swimming. My martial art days are behind me. Keep us updated on the advice & progress 👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻

I think you’re asking for trouble with any contact sport. Get advice from your cardiologist but I’d say it’s a definite no.

I know some people with PMs have engaged in contact sports but with padding to protect the device, I believe special padded garments are available. I'd say you should ask in one of the Facebook pacemaker groups, they tend to be much more active, with more members and so a wider range of experience, than this forum.

As above - talk to your cardiologist.

Hi, thanks for the link, I was there and have been calling around trying to get an answer as BJJ is wrestling/grappling rather than heavy contact. There's no running to each other or punching, kicking, it's mostly rolling around on the floor.
