Hypothyroidism and Amiodarone

Has anyone experience of Amiodarone leading to primary thyroid failure, just had a call from my surgery after a recent blood test saying I need to start on treatment with Levothroxine asap.

This hypothyroidism would explain many of my current heart failure related symptoms which have been getting worse, did the Throxine help and how long did it take?

I never knew you could take thyroxine and Amioderine together?I was found something else to take instead of the Amiod. If you take Amiod. it then supposedly messes up youy thyroid. The cardio. refrained from giving me Amioderone because I had to take the thyroxine. This was many years ago so do check this out.

Thanks for the reply, I’m sort the other way around, I have been on long term Amiodarone which has caused the thyroid problem, so I need the thyroxine to get that sorted. I have a meeting with the heart nurses to go over options but from my research Amiodarone remains in your system for months, I would love to get off it and will ask about replacements, I will let you know how I get on.

In my case, they stopped the Amiodarone and the thyroid gradually returned to normal. Unfortunately the irregular heartbeat returned and I ended up having Cardiac Ablation.

I have been in thyroxine since 2010. They put me on amiodarone for 12 months.

Thyroid problems have been known to cause high cholesterol .

I’m on 112.5 levo daily (100,125 alternating days)

it will take time for levo to kick in , blood test at 3 months to start off.

You will still have brain fog. You start at 50mg a day, they adjust it on blood tests, so be patient.

Yes, I experienced an over active thyroid when i stopped taking Amiodarone. I lost 10kg and my brain was constantly on!

This was treated with Thyroid meds successfully.

I then had to return to Amiodarone after receiving a shock from my ICD which made my thyroid become underactive.

I'm now taking Levothyroxine and levels have returned to 'normal'.

I'm expecting to come off the Amiodarone at some point and expect my thyroid to become over active again.
