whats the point of 3.75Bisoprolol - British Heart Fou...
whats the point of 3.75Bisoprolol
Hi, I see your are enjoying bisoprolol as much as I did (not). I was put on 2.5mg daily after HA last April, during the summer I was getting fed up (can't use the real words) so contacted GP saying I want off it as was affecting ability to even moderately exercise including walking up hills where I knew my HR should be 110-120 but bisoprolol was holding me back and HR didn't go above 90 and In bed HR was in the 40's. They "agreed" in consultation with cardiologist to drop it to 1.25mg.In September GP diagnosed A fib so put me straight back onto 2.5mg and referred me to cardiology. Anyways I ended up with a 24 hour holter (in November) which backed up what I was saying about my heart rate range so they agreed to wean me off it, took 1.25mg for 2 weeks then stopped altogether on new year's eve . I do get anxiety like never before as part of weaning off but hopefully that resolve soon when it's out of my system.
Based on my experience I think 3.75mg is probably reducing your HR by about 15 to 20bpm, so it might be worth pushing GP to hassle cardiology, get a 24 hour holter monitor which hopefully convinces them to get you off it.
It is a go to for AFib but my cardiologist was happy I come off it even when I had persistent A fib (which Amiodarone has now converted to Normal Sinus Rhythm so I'm waiting to find out what next..)
It sure tests us mentally too so I wish you good luck getting off it if atall possible.
Thanks for that, I just want to get to see a cardiologist to see what he says, by when I asked gp last week how long to wait to see the cardiologist he just shrugged his shoulders and said that waiting lists are long,I,ve been waiting nearly 5 months, I know other people on this forum, have been waiting longer.
I know it's a cost of a few hundred £ or maybe a couple of £k with any tests but lots of chat on here about going private for consultation, meds review, holter monitor where results are turned around quickly. I'm lucky that where I am waiting list was not as long and it would have painted me to shell out some hard earned when NHS is "free" but I wouldn't have ruled it out..
I ,ve thought about it but at the the precise moment of time I can,t afford it ,need to on with work , but when I,m working and these things keep happening it makes me getting stressed out.
Like RF260 I went private as fortunately have health insurance. I had a serious condition identified on CT angiogram and had no indication when I was likely to see a cardiologist. I was so worried that I had no alternative but to go private. The waiting lists to see cardiologists are ridiculously long. Good luck.
Hi there, my referral for the cardiology consultant took 12months to be seen and the appointment was only 15mins, he didn't even explain to me what the dos and donts where for Arotic root dilation dilation, the Bhf was a big help to explain things, but most of all the this form room has been most helpful especially you mobyfool and I thankyou for your reply. I would ring the cardiology consultant secretary at your local hospital and say that you have been waiting 5 months now for your appointment and could also ask them how much more time you have to wait. My appointment with the cardiology consultant took so long because my doctor didn't not put the referral through when I was first diagnosed in March 2023, I found out my referral was done in September 2023 and got to see the cardiology consultant in March 2024. Please give them a ring and find out what's going on.take care.
Hi. I too am struggling with awful side effects of Bisoprolol and trying to wean myself off of them. Only problem is after a couple of days without taking any my heart goes into overdrive, which is a bit scary, so resort to taking one to settle it down. Then start all over again which is really getting me down. You said you were now on Amiodarone for AFib.
Can you tell me how you find it as an alternative to Bisoprolol please? I would really appreciate your comments.
I also have AFib.
Many thanks
No I,ve only been on different doses of bisoprolo, I came of them last year for a while, but like you started having problems now I,m on 3.75
Hi, Bisoprolol and Amiodarone are actually for different things. Bisoprolol is mainly to control rate and Amiodarone is to control rhythm.Being off of Bisoprolol (2.5mg daily) for the last month has increased my resting heart rate from around 45 to 60 but that is fine.
Amiodarone was prescribed from 1st January prior to a planned cardioversion but actually got me into normal sinus rhythm after just 9 days despite having been in 24/7 AFib for 6 months, the intention is to stay on it for a short time given potential side effects so I am waiting for blood tests next week to see if 6 weeks of use has caused any issues, that will determine how much longer I remain on it or go to an alternative rhythm control med.
Back to bisoprolol given my resting heart rate was on the low side (confirmed by 24 hour holter monitor) they were happy for me to come off it and keep as a pill in pocket but thankfully I have not needed to do that so far
Good luck with things settling down
Thank you so much for that. In that case the Amiodarone would probably not be suitable for me. I’ve been on the Bisoprolol for almost 4 months but have been slowly weaning off for the past 6 weeks or so and got down to half 125mg tablet per day then stopped altogether, but like I said do resort back to taking one when heart rate goes wild to avoid going into AFib episode.
I did consider the ‘Pill in the Pocket’ method at least until the withdrawal issues have settled down.
What a nasty little drug this is. I suppose it does the job but the terrible side effects are awful and the chronic anxiety it has caused is debilitating.
I have never suffered with high BP ( always been on the low side) and heart rate was perfect. Obviously both were high during an AFib episode and I think that’s how it was judged by the doctors when in A&E when first diagnosed.
If I had known exactly what I was being prescribed I would never have started taking them in the first place, would have just taken the anticoagulants (Edoxobam) as they are necessary for the stroke risk.
Apologies for the lengthy message and thank you for your response.
Hi. You say you're weaning yourself off them, but say after not taking any for 2 days etc ...... That's not weaning off them, you need to cut the dose down for a period of time, then again etc until you get to the point of not taking them, not just stopping taking them.Hope it all gets sorted soon.
Hi. I have been weaning myself off them, gradually reducing over several weeks. I got down to half a 125mg tablet daily for a couple of weeks then stopped. But after 2 days heart was racing and had to take one again to calm it down.
I don’t know how much more I can reduce them without this happening.
TBH I have no idea and I am not qualified to have either, like anyone else. All I do know is these drugs seem to be handed out like smarties and I believe there is a growing feeling their use is beginning to be questioned in many cases. For me they were a terrible drug and my life restarted the day I came off the bloody things.
If I were you I would go back to your GP, ask him why you are on them, tell him that they are not helping and if you don't get some answers soon you are going to stop taking them, and see what he says. It's not acceptable to have to wait these lengths of time we deserve better than this rubbish it's starting to wear very thin frankly.
Hmm. Whats the point of my prescribed half a 1.25 tablet of ramipiril too 🤦🏼. I’ve become fed up of cutting it into dust (either a cutter) so I take a full tablet now after discussing it with pharmacist, she questioned the efficacy of the half tablet. I’m on 1.25mg bisoprolol, was reduced a month or so after discharge from hospital after 4x CABG (nstemi) . Consultant recently said I could trial stopping it if I wanted. I gave it a go and didn’t like the way I felt, so I’m back on it. Feel good, resting heart rate in fine from 49-50 to 42-44. Working rate up to 160s ( running /swimming).
Pill cutting can be very tasking. Sometimes I discard the pill if I did not properly cut to the desired milligram and start cutting a brand new one😃😄😄😄
I just Don,t feel like it does anything, except from stressing out,and my heart rate changing all the time.
160??? Isn't that too high? What is your target heart rate?
I’m on 2.5 twice a day, my hr sometimes goes down to 40 while sleeping, average is around 54. Only goes up to over 100 when excepting myself.
I’m wondering by comments if the stuff is addictive? Being weened off suggests addiction. …???
To stop you having a stroke.
Suppose so ,but I causing so many feelings in chest
it’s the AFIB that you can feel. Depending on what the cardiologist finds then your dose may need increasing to help control it. It’s not a nice feeling, especially when your waiting for follow up appointments to actually get diagnosed. But if the dose you are on can help prevent you having a stroke then you’ve no choice but to just wait it out. Have you contacted the cardiologist secretary at the hospital to see where you are on the list. They are normally very helpful.
I have heart failure AFib. I am on 5 mg a day. It has slowed my heart down to a rate whereas the oxygen demands of the muscle can be met, plus it protects the heart from stimulation of adrenaline which causes heart failure making it beat to fast and work to hard. It also helps reduce BP. I have had allblation too. I will have to stay on beta blockers for life as part of HF combination
Why don't you ask your GP to lower the dose and/or split the dose to a smaller dose twice a day? Also, have you thought of ringing the BHF cardiac nurses for further accurate info on 0300 330 3311?
I'm not a fan of bisoprolol either, but I'm now only on 1 25 mg per day which I can just about tolerate.
my cardiologist is trying me on verapimil 120 mg as the bisoprolol was giving me bradycardia.
It seems ok - at the moment.
sorry to hear you are struggling. As someone has said perhaps a holter test might be appropriate? Ask your GP to arrange it for you. My husband had a triple CABG in September and has recovered extremely well but cardiac rehab team needed a 5 day cardiac monitor doing before he could start the rehab classes.
His GP referred him and it was arranged within a week.
I too am on bisoprolol 1.25 mg and my heart rate goes very low. I also feel drained with it and my reynauds has worsened. However I’m hoping it’s now going to be stopped as I’d previously got a wrong diagnosis.
Push your GP.
Had a 1 day holter test last May to check on my At Fib ,said there were slight changes from 2018 when first diagnosed with At Fib but nothing to worry about ,I was put on bisoprolol because of high blood pressure and more noticeable feelings in chest.
Could you ask your GP to refer you to the rapid access pain clinic? Sounds daft but my husband had been having a weird sensation down his left side but no other symptoms of pain etc. He saw them straight away thankfully and at his insistence arranged a CT angio and they found he had a 90% LAD blockage and quickly followed a triple CABG. He’s still not seen a cardiologist yet due to the waiting lists.
It may be the way to go for you?
Docs seem quick to prescribe meds without actually knowing the cause of your symptoms as I and my husband have recently found. Thank fully he has had his CABG . I had been told by a cardiologist I had heart failure over the phone, prescribed meds. Not convinced I paid for a CT angio which showed no CAD whatsoever, calcium score of nil, however what they did find is I have a 11 x 14 mm hole in my heart. The cardiologist performing the scan has now referred me to another hospital’s Adult congenital heart defect team.
Please keep pushing your GP
Thanks, will do ,when I saw gp last week ,he did a couple of checks and just up the dose, told him getting stressed out about this ,but he said just have to wait to see cardiologist, Don,t know when ,been waiting for nearly 5 months
I was told “it is saving your life” in a matter of fact way by my cardiologist so have to put up with side effects. I’m retired now so it must be very uncomfortable and worrying for people working with these side effects. Listen to your Cardiologist not GP as they are the professionals. Try to see one privately just once to get all your answers then you will know where you stand. Good luck x
Hi, I had a heart attack and 3 stents 2 years ago, They put me on Bisoprolol 2.5mg. There seemed to be no effect until I started to get back to 5 mile walks. I was ill with low BP and heart rate. Not once did the doctors suggest the god awful drug might be the culprit. I did my own research. Monitored myself kept records and went back to Drs. They wanted to add another drug! I insisted the drug be lowered to 1.25 then eventually just stopped taking it. I was fine. My BP went back to a normal rate along with heart rate. It does not go above 110 when exercising. Took me a year to sort out, oh and my EF went up from 40-45 to 54! Cardiologist was rather surprised lol.
I don't know how my mum coped with her slow heart rate of 46bpm for so many years. She kept the house clean and had lots of energy on Bisoprolol.
Im on 1.25mg daily RHR 50/55 when im at the gym goes up to 90/160 on what exercise
It keeps your heart at a steady beat. Its actually very useful. I was on it for 2 weeks post CABG with no obvious side effects.
