Hi all.A year ago today, 1st February, since Ralph had his quadruple bypass and his nightmare started.
Thank goodness now he is in a lot better place.
Had his trachy changed last Thursday, and is now capping 12 hours a day. Next appointment is 13th March and they will assess then if they'll try to get a date to go into hospital to be monitored at least 24 hours then take it out! Scary stuff, watch this space.

What a year you've had. I joined this forum at about the same time and have followed your story. I was just wondering how he (and you) were doing now. Thanks for the update, I'm looking forward to reading about a successful hospital stay soon.
I'll be quite honest, Ralph was thinking he may leave it in, as he's naturally scared it would go wrong and he'd be back, not speaking or eating and drinking, but we had a good appointment and were reassured by the talk with his Dr. So we'll see, one day at a time eh?x
I'll be honest, I think ive had ptsd last few days, it's hit me.Ralph says I had it worse than him the first 11 weeks, as he only remembers the last week in cicu in Sheffield. He has remembered it all since he moved to chesterfield. He had no idea my son's had visited him in Sheffield.
So lovely to hear the update, I've been hoping things were progressing well for you both. Capping all day is great! Sending my very best wishes for the next steps, whether the decision is to remove trachy or not. Much love ❤️
He's thinking seriously as he doesn't want to go backwards. As he says now we can go out, have a meal and talk. He would hate to have to have a rig fitted again for food and no speaking. However as I said the Dr was amazing and very optimistic, so we'll see how it goes if he can cap over 24 hours in hospital. Xx
Was wondering how you both were, so very glad to read this positive update. Good Luck going forward, you have coped so well in the past I am sure you will again. You are an amazing pair. Love, Jan xx
Wow, and Spring is around the corner. I've read all the lovely comments and replies and I fully understand the "scary" part of this. That you and Ralph can go out and eat and talk is certainly a reason to celebrate and hold on to and to even imagine "square one" again must be frightening and Ralph must be thinking of not putting you thru the mill again! On the other hand, you've both been pioneers in this past year reaching levels of achievement you never thought possible, so maybe, with the doctors encouragement, there is one more leap of faith to make. I so feel for you both and no one who has ever read your story will ever forget it. You have all of our thoughts and prayers. Life is all a journey and I salute you both. ❤️
That's really wonderful to hear of Ralph's continuing progress but I understand the reluctance It's a massive step into the unknown again You two are a inspiration to us all of the strength and endurance of of the human spirit keep us updated and lots of love to you both
Hi, it's lovely to hear from you, I can't believe it's a year ago today that your most difficult journey started, you have both came so far and been so brave, Ralph is amazing the way he has fought his way to where he is just now and I'm sure you being with him every step of the way and encouraging him has been the one thing that has kept him going. It's great that you can get out and about and go for meals again that must be lovely and I can understand why he might want to leave everything as is because changing things when they are working is scary. Wishing you both well and I am sure you will keep us posted whatever you decide, take care char ❤️xxx
lovely to hear your update. It’s understandable that you are nervous about the procedure that is coming up, but it sounds like you have an excellent doctor and I am sure that he will be happy to talk it all through and listen to your concerns. I think that that emotional aspect is as important as the physical side but we tend to overlook that.
Well done on all the progress that you have made and thank you for the update. Look after yourselves Sue and Ralph. X
Glad to hear he's doing so well. Honestly you both deserve a medal for what you've been through. I think in his position I would also be very tempted to leave well enough alone but it depends on the long term effects of the trachy and just how confident the doctor is. I certainly wouldn't want to go into hospital right now with all these winter bugs around.
They've said he wouldn't go in until at least April, when allegedly flu season is easing off. Even if he goes in if he doesn't feel confident after 24 hours capping he can still leave it in, so there's no pressure from them xx
That's good. Hospitals are dangerous places right now. I'm glad they're not putting pressure on him but it would be good if the consultant gives a strong opinion. After what he's gone through I to tally understand his reticence.
A year already and what a year it has been for you both but what a miracle to
It has been the strength of Ralph and the love from you that has got you both this far and an inspiration of what love and staying strong can do and from a place where you thought there was no hope to a place where you both are today
I shall be watching this space but if anyone can do this then it is Ralph with you by his side as you have always been
