Toilet paper and paper towel shelves I my local supermarket. Sanitizer/soaps the same as are paracetamol and related products. There was also limited berries and frozen food. I had hoped things would be restocked by now. I did get some vodka (reduced) and Big Tom though! Vodka 🍷(bloody Mary)

it’s ridiculous michael. i couldn’t get tinned tomatoes or heinz tomato soup today. i normally make my own soup but when i’m poorly i can’t go past heinz tomato soup so i’m a bit gutted😩

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply to Shoshov

I sometimes make it with tinned tomatoes. A dash of Worcestershire sauce, a small glass of white wine (and another for myself 😁) and a dash of pepper lift it!

Shoshov profile image
Shoshov in reply to MichaelJH

i know but you can’t beat heinz when poorly🤣no tinned tomato anyway. oh well❤️

in reply to Shoshov

No tinned toms in Eastbourne, but plenty of jars of Passata - great substitute, especially for soup.

Bonus - lob some of that vodka instead of the wine and there you have a Bloody Mary!

I pop the vodka into Big Tom! 😁

Try making lentil soup from dry lentils. Great nutrition and few people make soup this way.

hi aranjuez a wee favourite in scotland. there’s definitely plenty in scotland who love lentil soup❤️

I walked up to my pharmacy( or as I like to call it - my drug dealer!) for my latest supply and there was a queue. There's never a queue as it is attached to the surgery, but today a queue, seems that most of them were on the hunt for hand sanitizer!😤

Aranjuez profile image
Aranjuez in reply to SpiritoftheFloyd

Washing your hands for 20 seconds thoroughly will remove more than those sanitizers. You can also use just alcohol to sanitize your hands in a pinch.

Pound shop had plenty of stuff but no hand sanitiser

I have brought bathroom and kitchen wipes to use on my hands when out as thought it was better then nothing .

Chemist in my area have said thay are unable to get hand Sanitizer from suppliers .

MichaelJH profile image

We don't have a Pound shop. Someone tried to open a Guinea shop but could not get planning permission for change of use. McD's have also failed to get a foothold!

"Guinea shop"...you must live near Mr Rees-Mogg!

How about Lidl

I think thier Aloe Vera toilet rolls are better than top branded ones

Also had most other stuff in good supply .

McDs no great lost can not think of anything worse than fast food

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply to Rose54

We don't have a Lidl or Aldi either. In order of closeness Waitrose, Sainsburys and Co-op. There is a Tesco Metro a bit further afield but I am no fan. Opening that particular branch cost us a butcher, a corner shop, a wine shop, a PO and a pine shop! And you cannot park!

You'd think no-one's ever washed their hands before now, this panic buying makes no sense at all. We could see a whole shift in behaviours. Perhaps even footballers will stop spitting all over the pitch - who knows??

stevejb1810 profile image
stevejb1810

That is exactly what my local Waitrose looked like at 1pm on Friday

I could not find hand sanitizer either and forgot about loo roll. But I think you could buy hydrogen peroxide couldn't you like 4 or 6 % diluted into a spray bottle either that or use the vodka.

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply to

Vodka is 40% and they you need 60% minimum for sanitizer...

in reply to MichaelJH

Maybe adding some tea tree oil or some other anti bacterial oil would make it more potent.

in reply to MichaelJH

I made my own sanitizer with stuff from Boots. Mix 50 ml Aloe Vera gel with 100 ml surgical spirit, then add 30 drops of an essential oil (I used tea tree oil for it's antibacterial properties). I put it in old pump spray bottles and keep one in the car.

My husband thinks it's better than the bought ones, not so harsh and drying on the hands.

Definitely finding smaller more local shops seem to still have stock rather than bigger retailers.

I agree, a lot of people don’t shop locally ,my local Premier Store had plenty of toilet rolls

Have heard that dry wipes soaked in mouthwash can also help (mouthwash with alcohol in it)

Just heard an OAP in a local supermarket had a single packet of pasta snatched from her. That person deserves a smack! People's behaviour is nearly getting more worrying than the virus itself!

What is it with toilet roll? Can anyone explain why people keep buying it?

Chronic25_Catlover profile image
Chronic25_Catlover in reply to COYW

I know I don't understand haha but it's like you do see about if we had an apocalypse that people go straight for the loo roll aha and tins and such.Diarrhoea is not even a common symptom haha and at most if you do have you stay at home 2 weeks haha.Think just people panic buying as in not even thinking just grab everything and anything haha.Which isn't good for people who need supplies too who may be elderly and disabled etc especially in things like meds cause I bet chemists have even been busy

Brandibell profile image
Brandibell in reply to Chronic25_Catlover

I read somewhere that apparently it can cause a jiffy tummy if it gets into your stomach..but not as common as destroying your lungs. I think people need some sort of crutch to say i am prepared and toilet paper seems to be it..🤷🏽‍♀️(Coping strategies)

ollie16 profile image
ollie16 in reply to Brandibell

I haven’t heard this, just the exact opposite, that diarrhoea is almost unheard of.A dry cough, tiredness and trouble breathing are far more prevalent.

That’s what I would like to know. Over 70 ,s will probably be to,d to isolate for four months how on earth will we get food if food deliveries are booked up as they are now. They might has well shoot us now have done with it

Well, I can't imagine being in lockdown at home without it I'm afraid. Since we don't go in for bidets here it's a necessary evil.

SapphireJ profile image
SapphireJ in reply to COYW

I noticed the shortage of toilet rolls, after there was a shortage of tissues. So maybe the loo rolls are serving a dual purpose. My colleague was at the supermarket today and found people stocking up on botted water! WHY!

My local chemist has now sold out of razors - what is that all about?

It seems to be that if its on the shelf, buy it, just in case. Bonkers.

Auiron profile image

Supermarkets are keeping back supplies of certain items to make sure customers get a supply of loo rolls etc., with their delivery. My delivery arrived at 10:15pm last night and two men unloaded at record speed - a text sent earlier said they would be late. They had to make a few extra emergency deliveries.

Does disinfecting surfaces really prevent the spread of coronavirus?

I've had a personal email from the Sainsbury's CEO this morning (ok, when I say personal, I mean it's addressed to Alison from Mike), basically saying "we have plenty of extra deliveries coming in, but for gould's sake stop buying more than you need!"

I spoke to someone filling loo roll shelves (bumsies in my family terminology). He said that they had the usual level of supply but selling 4 times the usual amount. His idea was the stuff was filling someones spare bedroom!

It’s a World Wide Pandemic - the first sign that the whole world is going crazy is the uncontrollable urge to buy at least a cart load of toilet paper.

carpentry profile image
carpentry in reply to not2worry

...I recall that during the Second World war - my mother used to cut newspapers into useful size bits ...put a hole in the corner and hang it in the loo...(The Daily Herald and The People comes to mind)!...that is when one could not obtain the awful Izal stuff...which was a bit like using baking paper...too much information... but there you go...and here we go again...there will be a 'run' on newspapers next...

Usually on a Sunday at my local Waitrose there are just a few people waiting when the shop opens at 10am. Today it was like Christmas Eve and I struggled to find a space in the car park and it's a big car park.

I wish to government would stop saying things like "we are going to ask over 70s to self isolate. Not yet, but it will be coming." That just fuels the panic buying.

carpentry profile image
carpentry in reply to dunestar

You are exactly correct! But it is not the Government who is to blame! It is the inconsiderate, selfish blameworthy public...those who lack RESPECT!! The supermarkets have it in their power to restrict supplies! I have information that a Morrisons supermarket in the East Midlands where a woman turned up with six packs of toilet roll. The check-out person took four packs away from her...and explained that a call was being made for people to be considerate of others and RESPECTFUL...well done that supermarket ...more should follow that example!

ollie16 profile image
ollie16 in reply to carpentry

Totally agree with you, the media doesn’t support panic buying, simply reports it, mostly condemns it.I saw a similar situation in Aldi with two women who filled Trolleys with Toilet Rolls and Kitchen Rolls and were made to take most of it back ,being limited to 2 packets per person.Whats just as bad are the social media morons who film infinite supplies of Toilet Rolls, hand sanitizers, pasta, rice, olive oil stored at home, unbelievable .

Qualipop profile image
Qualipop

Yes soup was unavailable for me too. Crazy. Anyone would think we're going into lock down for a year.JUst had an email from Sainsburys telling people to stop being stupid, they have plenty and are restricting what people can buy

carpentry profile image
carpentry in reply to Qualipop

Exactly and I agree wholeheartedly! See my earlier comment to "Dunestar"!

Further, it is not being stupid...it the selfishness of the once (great) british peoples awareness and present day lack of consideration for others! Complete and utter lack of RESPECT! I cannot recall such happenings at the outbreak of World War TWO...?

ollie16 profile image
ollie16 in reply to carpentry

As you said it’s a different generation ,mostly about me, myself and I, but not overwhelmingly, there are still many sensible people about, who don’t buy into the “I really don’t need these items ,but I am going to take them anyway ,well everyone else is doing it”,follow like Sheep syndrome.

I am sure that you have all seen this, but it is too good to not repeat it.

To prevent the spread of germs, people who need to sneeze are advised to do so into their upper arm. People have instead, started stockpiling toilet paper. This confirms the long-standing belief that too many people don't know their arse from their elbow 🙂

It looks like someone in the US is going to be prosecuted for buying up sanitiser and trying to sell it on at inflated prices. Maybe we could introduce this as an emergency measure this afternoon.
