Chest Pain 4 months after CABG4 operation

I had a mild heart attack In June of last year and in September I had an open-heart surgery.

I am still having pains on the left hand side of my chest caused by muscles and nerves.

My question is when will this pain start to vanish all together please? Thanks

Hi, I am 2 months post CABG4, but just this week asked my surgical team and cardiologist how long nerve and muscle chest pain is to be expected. Both told me that 9 months to 1 year is not uncommon; especially for nerves as it takes nerves a long time to regrow and heal. <3

your still in the early stages of recovery mate, you will get there. if it’s a constant deep pain have a word with your rehab nurse, more than likely it’s your body still healing.

let’s face reality they've torn your chest open to fix you up 🙂

I will be three years in march and i still get pain on my left breast muscle, not constant by the way. it normally happens if i don’t wrap up well in cold weather or i have been lifting stuff. The pain isn’t bad enough to take any thing for it and the feeling is more like an extreme twinge . My rehab nurse warned me about the potential of long term chest pain that some patients end up with, i was 68 at time of my surgery and i feel lucky to be still here and able to enjoy my family and still get out on my Gold-wing so the odd twinge here and there , tough.🤩

I'm also at 4 months (though I had a double valve job, not CABG). Definitely still have nerve twinges/pains/sensations.

I had my OHS sept 25th. I've still got numbness and the stinging sensation especially at night. If I cough or sneeze that might make me jump a bit. I haven't taken painkillers for a couple of months now. I'm expecting it to take a good year or so for the pain to go but there is a possibility the numbness will always be there. I just think of it as a reminder of what I've been through.

I’m 5 months CABGx4. , still have chest pain at times , my blood pressure rises , get short of breathe , take GTN spray

been told it’s muscle s etc but do keep an eye on it

We are on a different journey of different lengths . I think I expected too much and didn’t accept and appreciate how long the recovery might be

My chest took at least a year to settle down. A light massage of the area around the scar often helped ease it. I still get the occasional twinge and that is over six years after the op. However, it is nothing in comparison to the damage to my wrist where they harvested an artery from my arm. At times it is like I am being knifed and I have to use Ibuprofen gel to settle it.

My doctor told me in 6 months time there will be day's you will forget you had surgery, she was spot on . Its been 9 months now and all chest discomfort has gone.

Hi, I had OHS for a new valve over 5 years ago aged 49 and fairly fit. It was still uncomfortable to bend over to tie laces a year on but on the plus side I could run a 5k quicker than prior to op. I still can't comfortably lie on my left side for any length of time.Take care.

Hello,I think it varies between person to person. It can be due to a variety of different things and not just one thing. If you are at all concerned perhaps talk to your cardio rehab team or your GP. I am 2 years post op from double cabg today actually!!! It just takes time for everything to settle down. Good luck and stay well.

Thank you everyone. Your comments are very comforting.

Yes, the pain seems to get worse in the cold weather.

Also my blood pressure has not settled down yet as it is still high in the 140s. It was lower after the operation but kept going up despite increasing the dosage of my ramipril. Looks like I will need to see my GP again.
