bypass scar treatment

So I am now almost four weeks post op of single heart bypass. The posts I have found on this site from present to over the years has given me much reassurance- thank you!

I am now seeking advice on how and when to start treating my chest scar. It still feels quite delicate to touch and only two small lingering scabs which will fall of within days now.

But when can you start treating the scar and what should you use please? I recently had a carpal tunnel op and have used bio oil to massage the scar to reduce scar tissue and it has healed well. But thinking maybe this isn’t the best for this type of scar and where it is? Maybe silicone strips and gel better? Can and should you massage scar?

I too have sharp pains in my left breast which until I read previous posts on here on recovery times etc was causing some anxiety. Walked too far one day which then exhausted me the next! Getting used to a slower pace is imperative, but when you’ve been used to a fit and busy lifestyle, but I am not risking all the good work surgeons have done!!

Also thanks for the no drinking advice! With Christmas only a few days away and spending time with family, I have been thinking I’ll have a drink, however reading past posts, don’t think I will be! Small price to pay , don’t want to upset my heart with adverse reactions with meds! It was a very scary experience when my heart went in to AF for about 7 hours post op- My whole body was shaking with the heart flutters and beat.

I know these questions are so minor in the scheme of things, but hopefully some reassurance for others who are just starting this journey! There is light…. Honest!

was told by nurse to not put anything on until post-op appointment. Then told to not use bio oil as it has too much scent/additives. However, mine looked ok at 4 months (had infection early on) but is now very bright in colour and raised.

Take medical advice as we all heal differently xx

Yes I think you are right! Maybe I’ll wait for my 6 week check and ask their advice then. 👍

I'm 12 weeks post op today, have had no issues with my scar healing apart from being a bit itchy at times. I was expecting a horrible thick scar for the rest of my life that I would have to keep covered, instead I have what I can only describe as a scratch which is gradually fading away. I haven't used anything on it to help with the healing. I appreciate everybody's healing is different.

Following Aortic valve surgery I used Bio oil once the incision had healed and now 3 years on you have to look very closely to see any sign of a scar.

Well I gave my post triple bypass a good workout for four years with climbing steep hills in Scotland and playing tennis weekly. However I am now eighty two and it wasn’t my heart that has given me the warning but a recent spate of migraines that I couldn’t control twice a day which really terrified me. I was exhausted with doing too much as well as looking after a part disabled husband . So now I’m learning to calm down and slow down and it’s not easy as the brain wants to gallop ahead

Not what you're looking for?
