Heart Palpitations

Hi everyone, I’m 28 year old female who plays sport, eats well, drinks lots of water etc however over the last ten years I have had noticeable heart palpitations that over time have increased and got a lot worse. It got to the point in the last year where if I did any exercise the next day I would get frequent heart palpitations while resting or just walking. The doctors have put me on Bisoprolol whilst I’m waiting to be seen by cardiology, but I still get quite regular palpitations (most days and multiple times a day) Has anyone experienced this before and have any idea what it could be? I have no doubt that I have an arrhythmia problem, I just get scared sometimes that something will happen to me if I don’t get this sorted soon given that this has got worse over time. Any thoughts on this would be really appreciated as this is bothering me.

Hi chloe I'm a similar age and have been having my palpitations since August, in September was so bad I ended up in hospital for nearly a week, I had what they call nocturnal palpitations and severe shortness of breath heart rate would go so high. I was on 40mg of verapamil but now it's been increased to 120mg at night. I still get palpitations and shortness of breath so I don't know what's going on, could be my valve disease progressing but who knows anymore. Sorry your going through something similar and hope cardiology can see you soon and help to see what's the cause x ❤️

Hi, thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my post on here. Really hope you can get the right treatment too, it’s not nice being left in the dark about what’s going on. But it’s made me realise how I’m not alone and I really appreciate that. Wishing you well for the new year and a Merry Christmas ♥️

Hi, I’m sorry this is very stressful for you, I’m sure there could be many reasons for this, in my case it was undiagnosed aortic stenosis due to a bicuspid valve which I did need replacing. Have you had any tests ever due to your palpitations?

You are on medication to stabilise things while you wait so that’s great, I had very long wait times to be seen in my area so decided to have an echo/holter monitor/cardiology appointment privately (I was suffering with extreme anxiety at the time) which cost around £300 each. Doing this does cut out a lot of wait time if you are fortunate to be able to make that choice.

It’s the not knowing what’s up that’s the hard part, but you are right to get checked out, but whatever is wrong it will be found and sorted out and that’s the most important thing ❤️

Hi lovely, yes I’ve had multiple tests many years ago. I had an ecg, an echocardiogram, exercise test and a longer ecg for about a week. They said my heart was structurally sound. But it feels more linked to the rhythm of my heart?

Thank you so much for being so supportive and taking the time to respond to my post. After I read all these messages, I felt so much more at ease and less stressed. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and best wishes for the new year x

Hi Chloe, sorry to hear you are experiencing this. I have heart palpitations for the last 30 years and I'm told mine are benign. Despite going to the doctor multiple times and going to A&E once when they were very bad, no one ever told me to cut out caffeine until a few years ago. I've done that now, and although they haven't gone away entirely they are much, much better, and now I go weeks or months without them. I expect you might have tried this already, but I thought I would share in case it is helpful. Likewise, alcohol can also exacerbate but I'm not so good at cutting that out! Medications can make palpitations worse. After a heart attack last year (not related in any way to the palpitations, it was an artery blockage), I was put on a beta blocker which they changed a few months ago to a calcium channel blocker (because it was aggravating my asthma), and a side effect was quite bad palpitations for a few weeks, but again that seems to have settled now. I hope you get a resolution. Best wishes.

Hi Danerama, thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me on here. Everyone’s replies just helped me so much. I have cut out alcohol and limit my caffeine intake and you’re right it massively helps. My beta blockers seem to be working better now as time goes on and things seem to be settling more. Thank you again for your support. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and best wishes for the new year

Hello, Chloe. I first had palpitations when I developed moderate M.E., 25 years ago, but I got better from that. However, since my heart bypass op, in April last year, I get palpitations (very noticeable heart beats and throbbing throughout my body) after my twice-weekly Cardiac Rehab Phase 4 Exercises Classes, and after strenuous steep hill walking. This is especially so in bed, at night. After that op, I was put on Bisopralol, but it was halved to 5mg, and then stopped after a year, because it made my heart rate (pulse) go too low (down to 36 / minute).

Hello, I’m so sorry to hear you’ve been going through similar issues. I’m on Bisoprolol at the moment and at first it felt like it made my heart beat too slow as well and it felt so noticeable but that seems to have faded but it still reduces my heart rate to around 45bpm roughly speaking, but I can’t feel it like I did before, so I’m assuming the medication is working? Thank you for taking the time to comment on my post and wishing you a merry Christmas and best wishes for the new year x

Good morning Chloe, these palpitations are horrible aren't they. As you can see we all have differing stories of our own palp's journey and numerous solutions. My view is that firstly you need to keep pressure on the GP and cardiologist to focus on you and your individual solution. Secondly, try not to worry (too much!) as its a very common issue and worrying brings on stress which brings on anxiety which brings on palp's. Try to find out the exact cause of the palp's , as you can see by responses again these can be numerous. Thirdly, I suggest NOT Dr Google as its not related to you as an individual and may frighten / concern you down avenues which are unproductive. Fourthly, dont forget my first point, ensure you get a focus on you and your solution.

I have had 2 years of unfocused GP actions trying to reduce my BP, but they only seem to utilise Amlodipine and Ramipril and I have been on every combination of measure between nil of each and 10mg A and 5 mg R. The result was my normally (good) resting HR of 52-56 increased to 75 bpm, and i had flutters which put me in the cycle of stress and anxiety. After a reassuring cardiologist appt, a 24hrs holter monitor and both ECG and EEG I was advised that normal sinus rhythm was present but occasional ectopic beats. I stopped all meds and after about a week felt much, MUCH better. However, my BP started to become raised and I was persuaded to try Amlodipine "one more time" starting at 2.5mg. This didnt reduce BP but also didnt cause flutters to return. My BP continued to rise and so did the Amlodipine up to 7.5mg, all fine for about 2 weeks, then the increased HR and flutters returned, as did the stress and anxiety, so I was back in the cycle. I have emailed both my GP and cardiologist (saw him once and he said all ok!!) stating that there was no focus on my problem and after 2 years no solution to either fast HR and flutters and lower BP (145/82) OR higher BP and no flutters / racing heart. Going from 52-56 BPM to 75-80 doesnt sound a lot and 60-100 BPM is said the be "normal" but as an individual, it was very noticeable. I have charged the cardiologist with an appt to discuss a focused plan based on MY situation. I have kept records of BP and when my meds where changed and when fats HR / flutters were noticed, so I have a good idea that its the Amlodipine over 7.5mg which is when my issues start (common issue with A) and even with persistence I don't "stabilise". Whilst my issue and symptoms seem minor,I am not prepared to be "ping-ponged" around, so as per my Point 1 & 4, abov, take ownership of your issue, keep decent records to help the health professional solve your case, and try not to worry too much.

As a NHS worker I can see that its often a case of an individual being persistent in getting focused treatment to enable a solution to be found.

Good idea as mentioned to consider caffeine / alcohol intake, diet, exercise, lifestyle etc as you never know where the key lies to unlock a problem. Hope that your GP/cardiologist can get you sorted.

Hello, thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my post on here. Your advice helped me so much at a time where I really needed it. I am taking all your advice and my mind feels so much more at ease. It also feels nice to know I’m not alone, not that I wish any of these kind of problems could on anyone. I hope you keep well get the solution you need too. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and best wishes for the new year x

I had palpitations/ectopic beats for years w hich worried me tremendously. Because they happened randomly it took over a year to get a diagnosis. They would never happen when I had tests like ECG o r holter monitor. Eventually i was sent for a stress test and still nothing showed up during the test but luckily when I sat down to rest, they left the electrodes attached and bingo- a nice long run of ectopics. Finally they could identify where they were coming from and that they were totally benign. It took me months to trust in the diagnosis but the less I worried, the fewer episodes I had. I now haven't had any at all for over 6 years. Anxiety about them were for me the obvious cause and made them far worse. You need to be proactive and demand tests that can show the cause , Meanwhile try cutting out caffeine and alcohol, doing relaxation exercises and try not to worry. Have a talk to the BHF nurses too.

Hello, thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my post. I’m sorry to hear about your experiences but glad to hear you’re doing better. I absolutely agree that anxiety can play a big role in it all and make sure I do regular meditation. Also agree with the caffeine/alcohol side of things. Thank you again for all your support and advice. wishing you a Merry Christmas and best wishes for the new year x
