Heart Palpitations (no racing heart) and Bisoprolol

Hi everyone, just looking to calm my anxiety by getting some opinions or stories on here from others who may have a similar experience!!

I've been having heart palpitations for over 8 months now (waiting on results of a 24 hour ECG) and my Dr just prescribed me Bisoprolol 1.25mg to take for 2 weeks to see if it helps.

Thing is, my heart doesn't race when I get my palpitations, it happens most when I'm relaxing, just after eating or not doing much so I'm worried that it may slow my heart too much when it's working.

I was brave enough to take my first dose today, but now it's in my system I'm panicking about it (typical anxiety!!).

Has anyone else taken Bisoprolol with similar palpitations to mine??

1.25mg is a very small dose and most unlikely to slow your heart too much but it might stop your palpitations, so definitely worth trying. It's possible your palpitations are linked to anxiety. I know a couple of people who take a low dose of propanolol (another beta blocker) very successfully to treat their anxiety so that might be a very helpful side effect for you. Good luck, try not to worry (hard I know).

I have no experience of Bisoprolol but I would say go with your GP as he has prescribed this and utilise techniques to manage your anxiety. Easier said than done. 😍

hello I’m on Bisoprolol 2.5mg the only time I had when had my stent fitted and had to come off the drug for 3 days I had those side effects. All is ok , but if I was honest I use to think will I wake up the next morning. I’ve managed to dismiss those feelings more , by purchasing a 24/7 blood pressure monitoring system by Aktiia . It gives me piece of mind , I use to check the readings everyday, but now only if chest pain, and put that down to angina. And had a food tolerance test done . To help me know which foods were playing me up , seems to be doing some good for me .

Regards Rick

I find that my palpitations get worse when I'm resting, the slower my heart gets the palpitations go crazy. I'm on 120mg on verapamil at night was recently in hospital for a week because of my palpitations, shortness of breath and being sick and few abnormal ecgs and chest pain x hope you get on ok with your new medication.

I take Bisoprolol 2.5 x 2 a day (along side flecanide ) I find Bisoprolol extremely good for me. Your dose is very low. Don’t panic. I too suffer very much with anxiety at times. Mostly evenings. You will find it helpful I’m sure. Trust your GP. Don’t be afraid .

Bisoprolol doesn’t stop palpitations for most people. You need to learn to live with them if testing shows your heart is ok and the ectopics are benign. They’re usually there on and off for life for most people - and that’s a long time to be stressed by them!

For 90% of people, ectopics are harmless. They can be brought on by dehydration, hormones, stress and even coffee for some. Most of the population has them at some point they feel worse than they are

Bisoprolol doesn’t often control them. It’s not a dangerous drug, especially at such a low dose as you’re on so take it without stress. I was on 10mg a day at one point and I can assure you my heart kept beating! I’m now on a different drug but still a reasonably high dose. My heart drops into the 40s but again, it’s not going to stop so get that theory out of your head because it just isn’t possible.

Have a look on YouTube. Dr Sanjay Gupta York Cardiology. Search for palpitations and/ectopic beats video .It's reassuring and says 70% if people have them.

Hi there. I have palpitations all the time and have done since 2019. I too take bisoprolol but 2.5mg.I've had many holters, MRIs, scans amd even a stress exercise test yet there is no definitive answer.

Im about 3 maybe 4 stine overweight which I am dealing with. Ive been told there is nothing more the hospital can do and that I just have to live with them. It's not what I wanted to hear but then reassuring I guess its nothing serious.

I have no experience of bisopralol, but like you my palpitations are often worse after eating. Google Dr Sanjay Gupta York Cardiology. He has a video on Gastrocardiac syndrome which I found very helpful.

Hello , I think maybe try to trust your doctor and just give your body a little time to adjust to the drug . It sounds like you are getting investigated so just try to take a day at a time . Trust the Medics, keep it simple , keep the GP informed. I am on bisoprolol and had the same worries to start with ..it infact was a saviour and reassuring .Good luck..remember , try to keep things simple.

Hi, I was put on 2.5mg of biseperol after a 24 hr tracer showed I had SVT (now confirmed as atrial tachycardia). I found it strange at first exercising as my heart rate never went above 110bpm when before it would be nearing 140. I’ve since had my meds adjusted a few times to control my condition and taken off biseperol completely and funnily enough I initially missed having that slower heart rate that the biseperol gave me. As others have said 1.25mg is a low dose. Your heart will keep beating. Just see it as a reason to relax and calm. It’s good that you’ve had a tracer done and take it from there. Take care of yourself.

Hello UmbraFae, yes I had palpitations and I had a cardiac arrest (not from the palpitations) and I had a icd fitted, my heart had been beating slowly. I thought the icd would help the palpitations but it didn't seem to. Anyway I like you was given bisoprolol 2.5 and was extremely anxious it would slow it down more. But it didn't they have helped my palpitations . I hope this has helped.

There are many different kinds of palpitations. Many benign others needing urgent attention. You might like to ask for a 72hr holter monitor if not already done. I'm on bisoprolol and suffered myocarditis last may. I've been through the mill. Trust the doctors. They've fixed me and I by the sounds of it was much worse than your case (I was in intensive care at one point). Now I've just come back from a fitness class. Doctors do not let people go home unless they're sure your safe. Especially when it comes to the heart. Relax. You may also want to try cutting out alcohol and coffee. Or other things one by one. Most of all relax.

my HR over 100+ has been diagnosed to relate to postural hypotension ( with tilt table test) but infact the 1.25 bisoprolol dose my GP had prescribed was removed as inappropriate as the High HR was needed as the BP was plummeting and needed to help get oxygen to the brain. I also get HR raised while sitting and what seems slightest of movement like picking drink up from in front of me, so not just standing.

Had regular palpitations undiagnosed over many years but got too bad and called 111. Had ECGs before but never picked up anything too dramatic until actual ECG in AE when up to 271 so admitted to Cardiac unit. Maybe push your GP to get referred as had heart XRay and MRI which diagnosed what problems were and prescribed treatment including Bisoprolol. Seems to be working ok.

Not sure about the palpitations, but I was put on Bisoprolol 1.25 daily for heart pains. I was told it would take a couple of months before it kicks in.

I did feel unusual initially but feel fine now and it's helping with my heart troubles. Still on it at the same dose and have a long awaited cardiology review in November

I am on 5 mg daily. I still get occasional flutters/palpitations, particularly when lying down. My heart rate remains nicely low — avg. mid 50s.

My last big incident was five months ago — high heart rate, locked at 160+, cardioversion. My bisoprolol’s purpose is to keep me away from sustained, high heart rates — so far so good.

The two times that I have gone into frank a-fib since May, my rates were 90-100 off and on, and then went back to totally normal on their own within two to three days.

Indeed, as you say, there will always be the blasted confusion between head and heart with our mongrel condition.

Is it a-fib? Panic? A bit of both? Feels like I’m dying. Am I dying?

I try as best I can to work with my doctors. A-fib is a very common condition and there is plenty of medical knowledge at my disposal.

Granted, there remain times I feel as if I am being tormented by my own hypervigilance. From what I read here, many of us suffer that trait. Breathe it away if you can.

Hi umbrafae, how do you know it's the bisotolol causing it. I've been having what I call thumps in my heart for a long time now and I've been on many different drugs and yes it is horrible. That's why I'm hoping to be considered for an AV node ablation. It sounds like you are at new to this so if you find a solution all the best for you. All the best and make sure you get a good wise cardiologist.

I've been put on the Bisoprolol for my heart palpitations - I've been taking it for 3 days now and it has seemed to have worked! I've maybe felt a handful of palpitations in the past 72 hours as opposed to them being near constant some days. Hopefully it stays this way!!

hi I have been diagnosed with SVT (originally thought it may have been paroxysmal AF). I was initially prescribed Dronedarone which has been extremely effective at stopping the attacks of racing heart. However I was still getting palpitations and so I was also diagnosed 2.5mg of bisoprolol once daily and that also has been extremely effective at controlling the palpitations.

I also practice meditation and deep breathing using the Calm app and that really helps, as does doing min 30 mins of steady state exercise 3-5 times per week. My cardiologist asked me to stay away from high intensity exercises (HIIT).

I gave up alcohol (honestly don’t miss it and no use 0-0 versions) and also all forms of caffeine (which for me is a trigger).

Hope this helps

My scenario is very similar to yours. I have been having what i call and awareness of my HR in my stomach and sometimes my neck when lying down, happens more so at night. Sometimes i am more aware of it than other times, however when i measure my HR it is in the 60s-80s so not sure if it is palpitations. The Dr was not sure either - i wore one monitor for 2 weeks that was clean then another for a week six months later that showed one episode of SVT and VT for a few seconds so they prescribed 1.25mg biosporol as a precaution. I have not started taking it yet as i have heard some horror stories of it being the worst drug you can take but at a low dose maybe it will help. Thing is no cardiologist has been able to confirm if my palpitations are palpitations or just anxiety related. BP is pritty normal and resting HR is in the 55-65 range so i am worried too like you about taking the beta blocker.

I was on 2.5mg but as I've been recovering from a kidney transplant I had last year I've gone from weighing 54kg to 70kg and my blood pressure crept up a bit and now I'm on 5mg a day but I've rarely had palpitations since taking them so you should be ok they make you tired though like you been up for day's I'm in bed all day or night sometimes 😴 hope your OK and not over worrying to much 🙂
