Breathless in bed during the night.

Recently, just occasionally, I've woken up during nights a bit breathless. Because I'm laying down in bed I just try to relax till it goes.Is this quite normal please?

My medication is furosemide, bisoprolol, rampril, apixaban and simvestatin.

Thanks

Definitely not normal that you wake up at night feeling breathless. Could be because of heart/circulation issues or extreme sleep apnoea (which in itself increases the risk of having a cardiac incident). Better get in touch with your GP about it asap.

(From your name, I suspect you are an Arsenal fan in which case ignore the above. It's probably just you having weird dreams about Arsenal winning the Premiership this year. [Can't get the emoji thing to work otherwise a sardonic winking face would appear here. Joking aside, I would get in touch with your GP about the breathless business]

Have you tried sleeping more propped up on more. pillows?

I regularly get quizzed by medics about the number of pillows I use. Breathlessness when lying down needs checking out.

I guess it has some medical significance!

Contact your GP or even A&E. This could be serious and needs to be investigated urgently.

Breathing issues always need to be checked out, I suggest you start with your GP and ask for a review and lung function test.

If you are not already doing so I also suggest sleeping with your head and shoulder raised a bit. That can seem difficult at times but it relieves the pressure on your lungs and heart and allows your chest to expand more effectively

Hi, I've been waking up breathless recently from having bad dreams that I've been trying to run away from. I've had quite a few AFib episodes as well. I've put it down to anxiety with both the In-Laws being poorly. I've increased my Yoga and meditation and I think it is helping. If it continues, I'd seek medical advice. Good luck.

Hi Gooner,Since a diagnosis of heart failure in July 2023 i have been taking a similar cocktail of medications and more...although the furosemide was thankfully stopped months ago.Altho extreme breathlessness was a major issue before the diagnosis,I can honestly say that waking up during the night struggling for breath hasnt been an issue since discharge from hospital and starting the medications.Probably wise to see a GP/Specialist to get advice and checked out.

Hope you get sorted and continue recovery.

PS ..the sleeping on two pillows thing is quite important

I'm getting the impression that your on too many meds or dosages need tapering down. However, if your newly on these meds then in time your breathlessnes will go away.

You may well be right. Been on these meds for a few months now. When I was first put on furosemide my breathlessness improved significantly along with quite a bit of weight loss.

Currently I have noticed my breathlessness is a bit worse. No swelling in legs or ankles though. I don't know if this cold weather has any effect.

It's not too bad during night. It's only happened once or twice in bed. Walking up.stairs to bedroom makes me breathless.

I will make appointment to see GP.

The Pharmacist at GP practice is supposed to be monitoring my medication but never heard from them.

Winter is the worst time of thee year for people with illnesses. But it's good that you're going to see your GP.
