Returned to work

I have been off work for 2 months, and while I’m still recovering and trying to get used to the medication, I thought it was time to go back to work - to distract me from myself and my change in health status if nothing else. I met with my employer, who insisted on a Fit Note from the GP.

I’ve only met my GP once ever so wasn’t sure how he could really comment on my fitness since he doesn’t know me, and he doesn’t know my job. I tried to make an appointment to talk to him…but the Reception gate-keepers stopped that. Luckily someone phoned me from the surgery to make an appointment for a blood test I’d already had, and they were able to make me an appointment with a different GP (who also doesn’t know me), an actual face-to-face appointment, this morning on my way to work. She essentially agreed with me on everything, so I didn’t get any advice.

But I have got a phased return, starting with alternate half-days, and building up gradually, dependent on me tolerating it. And time off for Cardiac Rehab sessions.

It was a relief to have someone listen, acknowledge the benefit of me returning to work, and my first morning back at work went fairly well, as long as I don’t think too much about all the emails, the piles of paper, and various problems which were put to one side for when I got back. I now get a day at home to rest and recover before going back for another half-day, and it feels like it’s going to be OK…

well done for starting back to work just take it slowly and be mindful of any symptoms you have and check in with your GP on a regular basis. X

I'm glad that you got the outcome you wanted - but in my experience it is best to avoid the temptation to rush the process, so I would encourage you to take the tresting and recovery part seriously and enjoy a gradual transition back to the hours you feel comfortable with

Good luck🙂
