I had my aortic valve replaced in October 2022 and since then have been completely symptom free with no visits to my GP or A&E required. My question is, do I still have BAV and do I still need to declare it when applying for travel insurance? Anyone else had the same conundrum? Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers.

From my experience whether you fill in a form online or by talking to someone they all seem to follow the same format, so all I do is to answer each question as fully and accurately as I can. But if you feel you have not covered everything by doing this there is usually a question which asks if there is anything else to declare, at which point you can feed in your condition and it will be analysed as something new or bundled in with something you have already declared, and your risk factor analysed and the premium adjusted accordingly. If you don't declare then you might not be covered should anything go wrong.
Did you get any of your ascending aorta replaced when they did the BAV? Either way, I think I would declare a "BAV corrected by surgery with a [tissue/mechanical] valve" and that you have been discharged. One can never be too careful with insurers.
I declared my enlarged aorta, under monitoring and not due for surgery, which was a good job as I dissected whilst on that holiday! My wife was very glad to be able to answer the question whether I had insurance with a confident "yes".
Declare absolutely everything. I'm probably paying more than I should but I'd rather be safe than sorry. We travel a hell of a lot.
And who does your insurance?
All Clear Annual Trav.Ins.Both my self and better half have a long list of pre existing.
For the amount of times we go away it's very reasonable
I'm hoping to have that problem after I have my TAVI. Hopefully within next few months. One thing I would like to ask you please.
Are you intending to take long haul flights? If so, we're you given medical advice that it's OK to take flights?
Thank you and I hope you get your Insurance sorted out ok.
Good luck, we were supposed to be going to Granada in February but husband can’t get ACA to insure me or STAYSURE! I’ve had successful ablation, very well controlled low diabetes and won’t cover me 🤯
thanks everyone, I flew to the USA back in May and had gone through my bank (Barclays) underwritten by AVIVA with an add on for my BAV and it cost a few Bob. Reason for my question is that 2 years post op with no symptoms and having been discharged by my heart surgeon made me think I had recovered from the illness. I’ll do some digging and let you know how I get on, who I go with and what it costs me.
the question I'm always being asked on insurance questionnaires is if I have "ever" had heart problems. I tell them everything. My husband had AF on one occasion about 5 years ago which was treated with medication. He no longer needs to take medication and has not had any further events. We always declare it. Our insurance is expensive but I'd be too afraid to go without it.
