Travel abroad whilst waiting for TAVI

Having angiogram on 16th October in preparation for a TAVI. The TAVI, I was told, is a 5 month waiting list.We normally go away every winter to our cottage by sea in The Philippines.

Am hoping the cardiologist will give me the ok to travel. Rather spend time waiting in warm weather if I can. We have family around us out there too.

Thoughts?

The best advice would be from your cardiologist, who knows about your exact condition. As soon as my dodgy heart vale was diagnosed, I was told not to drive, suggesting there was a risk of serious illness before the TAVI.

You may have to tell your insurance company - should something happen in the Philippines, the cost of getting you home would be enormous, always assuming you were allowed to fly. And it would be well to check out cardiology services near where you're staying.

The nurse is asking the cardiologist on my behalf. All I need to know is that flying will be OK. If he agrees then the "risk" is up to me.

I'd just like to know first if it's OK to fly. Then I'll give everything else some thought.

check with the airline too, if anything happens during a flight they have to consider an emergency landing, so they are often reluctant to carry passengers with some health conditions

Good luck as I’ve been refused travel insurance by numerous companies including BIBA as I’m still under investigation for chest pain and none of them will touch me. Just had to cancel my trip to Spain in a weeks time. I’ve been waiting months to get this sorted out and naively thought I would have definite diagnosis by now and not still be waiting on tests. I could risk going without insurance but as I’m still getting symptoms daily I’ve decided that it’s not worth the risk.

I'll wait till I have heard back from cardiologist first and then decide whether to go or not.

Hi gooner

Bear in mind that although your cardiologist may say it's ok to travel you'll still struggle to find anyone to insure you whilst you're waiting for tests or procedures. Additionally, I would check the small print in the airlines T & C's as they may require a fitness to travel certificate.

Good luck

I'll weigh it all up risk wise.

Now and then, there are "horror" stories in the media about people who have fallen ill far from home with no travel insurance. We have a case in my area of a lad from overseas visiting the UK whose mother was presented with a £160,000 bill for treatment at an NHS hospital.

Not what you're looking for?
