Weight gain post surgery.

On Mar 18th 24 I had an aortic valve replaced by a tissue one.I am 69.Post surgery left me with an air bubble,AF and slight heart block.

All appear managed.

Pre surgery I was an active man playing golf, generally fit and around 11 st 7lb with variation of 7 1bs approx if on cruise holiday and always lost it with cut back etc.

I drank too.

When I came out of hospital I had no appetite and lost about half a stone.

Since May I have began eating again, doing rehab and enjoying walks etc.

Whilst I have not been as good as should be Biscuit wise etc, have not drank that much.

My issue is I have significantly and quickly put on weight around my middle mainly.Everywhere else seems normal.

My tablets are low too and less than pre op too.

Has anyone experienced this change and through good diet and exercise lost it again?

Hoping this is not a sign of my future bodily look!

I know there are worse things that could happen but my confidence was always surrounded by my happiness with my body image.

Thank you.

Hello :-)

I am glad everything seems to be going well other than putting a few pounds on

Others may come along and have some thoughts on this but I wonder if any of the medications are causing weight gain as some can

Because the weight is round your middle and nowhere else I think I would see my Doctor just to check what they thought but maybe don't mention the biscuites and possibly cut back which if you don't but them in you can't eat them if you are finding them hard to resist well that is what I have to do as I do :-)

You said you are walking which is a great exercise but you have not mentioned if you are playing golf again as maybe when you do start playing that might help lose some weight around your middle

Sorry I have no other advise but just get it checked out and hopefully they might be able to give a reason

Let us know how you get on :-) x

this happened to an acquaintance of mine. Sadly, he decided to return to his not-too-bad diet and very little exercise. Ignores what he had learned in rehab. So he’s podgy.

I’d have said that you should concentrate on the positives. You know what to do, because you’ve been to rehab. Possibly you should say goodbye to the biscuits and research the Mediterranean diet - plenty of veg, cook from scratch, avoid foods with additives (look on the packaging - if you wouldn’t have it in your kitchen, don’t put it in your mouth).

and the other side is the exercise, as you know already. Walking is great!
