A FIB

I have recently been told I’m in afib 70% of the time and feel exhausted and always tired.

Even though I have a recent ICD fitted.

My cardiologist has advised I take Amioderone for a while until an Ablation is available, which will take a while as there is a long wait for this.

This medication can have severe side effects.

Any advice would be welcome.

Talk to the cardiologist about the side effects. It seems that it takes the body at least a couple of weeks to accommodate these drugs during which time my husband has often felt lousy - low blood pressure and pulse, poor appetite etc often happening and so the tiredness and sleepiness caused by the AF are added to by the impact of the drugs but now things seem to have settled. He is taking a Beta blocker, Bisoprolol, which seems to have reduced his AF but it took several rotten weeks to work up to a dose of Bisoprolol which was effective. The cardiac technicians can see from the record of the ICD how much AF there is and at his last review all was good and his blood pressure is now within a normal range and he is feeling much more energetic. He is waiting for a by-pass, also a long wait. These are such difficult decisions to make. You could ask the cardiologist why Amioderone has been recommended rather than a beta blocker.

My husband was on amiorodone for 14 months due to severe VT's. Apart from being careful in the sun he had no problems or side effects at all.

So are you on Bisoprolol at the moment?

Hi, I've just come off Amiodarone after 2 stints & going back into AF following a cardio version. Don't read too much about it I find it's a stabilizer& just whack your factor 50 on & get out in the fresh air & sunshine ( when it comes). These consultants are smart & will monitor your health by regular blood tests . I had no side effects & would administer them again no problem if I go back into AF.

It can be an efective but tough drug for some. I flat lned on it after 11 days and was revived by an ambo officer on way to hospital. It may not happwn to you but watch it if you start feel rotten and high blood pressure gradually sneaking up over a few days.
