Apixaban and Bleeding.

Hi everyone. I have been on Apixaban for 6 months and a month ago I started bleeding when going for a poo. It got do bad that I went to A&E. They kept me in. I had an Endoscopy with contrast. They could not find any reason for the bleeding so they had me stop the Apixaban. Gradually the bleeding from my bum stopped. They told me to stay off the Apixaban for 3 weeks and start taking them again. If the bleeding starts again to let them know. Has anyone else had a similar experience. This just seems very strange to me. Thanks for your help.

what is your INR and their target for it.

It’s possible you have heamaroids. (Piles) and due to anti coagulant makes it worse.

Yes bleeding whilst shaving, I thought it would never stop, it did after 12 hours! It's a scary thought if it ever involved an accident! How would you ever stop bleeding in a real accident?

Best to have a chat with your doctor or perhaps a clinical pharmacist. It's possible that a different anticoagulant may suit you better. I bled more freely on Edoxaban and Apixaban than Rivaroxaban, and I had side effects with the first two but not the latter. Just a thought.

Nasty experience for you ; bad luck. As above, I’ve had shaving cuts that go on forever, but expect that from an anti coagulant, not internal bleeding.

Hope they sort it out soon

My dad has been on apixaban for many years and he has bleeding from it but we have not found alternatives. Did you manage to find a solution? Apixaban leaflet mentions bleeding as a common side effect
